L-Mount Alliance Owners Thread

They are pets? I'll admit I'm pretty scared of your pets.
I could tell everyone on earth the fear is totally irrational and lead by social cues but it won't work with something that's so primal. All I can do is show people how pretty they can be.

Hi all. Has anyone got any experience of adapting M42 and/or Pentax M lenses to the L-Mount?

I've got an Urth M42 adapter and struggling with infinity focus on at least one of my lenses. Tempted to try the K&F version. Any feedback welcomed!

Thanks

I've adapted M42 and Pentax K mount lenses to use on my S5 using Fotasy adapters. I read a few reviews on Amazon saying that the Urth adapters had issues.

Thanks! I'll try and get hold of a Fotasy adapter then. Tempted to give the K&F one a go too. I'll report back

Apologies for the thread drift, but I know a lot of people on this forum are like myself, and appreciate the pros and cons of FF vs MFT and may run both formats. I love the Panasonic series of cameras in all shapes and sizes

There is a new Panasonic G series coming with phase detect AF. Is this the G9 replacement that's been rumoured for a while....?

It has gone really quiet here recently. Have you all gone over to Nikon / Canon / other? Found something better to do?

Anyway, thinking of trying a bit more landscape and looking for recommendations for an ideal landscape lens. What thoughts please?

Never!

Still have my S5, just been too busy to process my photos from the summer. I've been looking at the very tempting deals for the S5ii and 85mm prime but really can't justify the upgrade cost when the S5 is so good.

Hopefully I'll start posting some pictures in a few weeks once I've cleared all my diy jobs at home.

Yep my S5 is the first camera I’ve had that has survived two episodes of GAS !

I love the image quality and ergonomics, it has to be the biggest bargain in FF cameras - I don’t understand why it isn’t more popular.

Regarding the lens what about the 14-28 ? Seems superb and has £100 cash back at the moment ?

I agree. I suspect it's the lack of phase detect af on the original s5, not to mention fewer influencers using lumix for photography. But I love mine! The 20-60mm kit lens is a serious piece of kit indeed, and I'm so glad more manufacturers are taking kit lenses more seriously now.

I was thinking this morning that one thing I loved about the old micro 43 kit I had was that I could cover from 24mm to 200mm equiv really easily, either with multiple decent but tiny lenses or even the single, excellent, 12-100mm f4 (sadly I didn't own this). I would love a superzoom for the l mount - a 24-200mm would be very cool and would undoubtably provide equivalent results to the m43 kit in a similar package (maybe a bit bigger!). Build it like the 20-60mm - ie basic sealing, variable aperture to keep size and weight down a bit - and it could be a great solution to travel. Or even target the m43 equiv and have it at a constant f/5.6 or f/8 aperture!

Anyone else want a superzoom?

Yes but I fear it would be massive - like you I think the 20-60 is just amazing - partly because how sharp it is and partly because I just love the focal range.

But yes it will due to the lack phase detect - which as a mainly travel/landscape shooter doesn't bother me one bit !

I'll try again - a few snaps taken whilst on holiday in Provence - all with the 20-60 but the images look less sharp on here !

I have a 50mm f1.8 for sale in the classifieds if anyone is interested !

I'm still here just mega busy and haven't picked up my camera in months, I just haven't had the time.

Off to London again next week, so will take one with me and see if I can get an hour or two in, perhaps some night photography / light painting stuff.

I continue to wonder how good a copy my 20-60 is but have been down that path previously. How does it compare with the 24-105?

As far as super zooms go - I have the 150-400 and find that a manageable walk around lens when it is needed. Plainly it doesn’t cover all needs but looking at WEX secondhand values, shocked at how cheap it is.

Not used the 24-105mm. The 20-60 is good though, I'm very happy with mine. It isn't prime lens sharp, it isn't prime lens corrected and it's certainly not pro level 2.8 zoom sharp and corrected but it's sharp enough, small enough, light enough, well built enough and covers a really useful range. focuses crazy close as well, though low magnification - it's just a very practical lens. It helps that the camera applies profiles automatically I'm sure, but the results are good enough for me and certainly good enough for excellent prints.

I rarely post in gear threads but I'm still loving my S5ii. Recently shot a music video with a friend using it so it's definitely getting a varied use!

I'd say the 14-28mm f4-f5.6 is a solid reasonably priced choice at the wide angle considering general landscape photography doesn't usually command wide apertures. I've noticed a trend of a lot of landscapers using a 70-200mm too to pick out and isolate sections of the landscape. Panasonic do two, a constant f4 and a constant f2.8 although the 2.8 is prohibitively expensive for most.

Sigma are releasing a 70-200mm 2.8 in December which I'll likely pick up if it's reasonably priced compared to the Panasonic alternative but for most of my landscape shots I get by with my 20-60 kit lens.

Here's a couple I took in the Czech Republic with my 20-60. Very capable lens for a lot of use cases! They come up a little muddy with the forum compression and resizing but I'm constantly impressed that such a cheap lens can produce such good results.

I'm after a tele lens, but native l mount lenses are not especially affordable. How do the autofocus adapters do on the Panasonic s series? I'm thinking of grabbing one and an ef mount 100-400.

The alternative is to save for a good long while and try to find a used native sigma, which is probably a much better choice, or I grab a micro 4/3 tele lens instead.

I very much like my Sigma 100-400 on my S5 and thought it was a very reasonable price. I see on WEX they have used ones - would a native lens be better than an adapter?

I have the viltrox EF - L lens adapter; it’s okay but not great.. works okay on the 70-300 L for example, and the 24-105 L; but not with the 50 1.4 it doesn’t AF at all. Plus if the battery goes a bit below 80 percent you can’t shoot 4K video or continuous shooting - go figure!!; also continuous AF sometimes is and isn’t possible. So I really am not convinced fully, I have the sigma 100-400 in l fit and it’s great. This is on an SL2. I got the 100-400 from London camera exchange a few months bag used, think it was 600. Don’t get an EF for use full time. It will drive you mad.

I use the Sigma 150-600 Sport for my telephoto. Really happy with it but the size may not be for everyone.

I genuinely find it very manageable though and I'm happy to carry it around handholding it all day without issue.

I have recently bought the Sigma 150-600 Sport and find a lovely lens also consistently sharp throughout the range all the way to 600 mm. I haven't had much success yet with tracking AF, but I have lots of combinations to try. As Adam said, the lens is slightly heavy but manageable with really good image stabilisation.

Tony.

Hi everyone, just found this firmware download available on Sigma website.

V.1.2 Firmware For the Sigma 150-600mm F5-6.3 DG DN OS | Sport - L Mount. 16/11/2023

In combination with Panasonic LUMIX S5M2 and LUMIX S5M2X, the AF tracking performance when selecting the AFC focus mode has been improved.”
I have just downloaded this and the AFC tracking seems to be a lot quicker much improved.

Excellent news! I've loaned mine to a friend but will get it updated when he returns it.

Caved in and ordered the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 DG DN Sports. Wanted a 70-200 2.8 but the Panasonic equivalent was consistently too rich for my tastes. Waited for the incoming Sigma on the horizon and I'm glad I did. Far cheaper and the reviews have been great.

Hopefully I'll post some shots with it soon!

I've been looking at the sigma lenses also but need to get more time with my camera before purchasing more stuff. I've barley had chance to use it.

My current GAS basket has the following in it lol.
I think I'm done for a while now.

I want a couple of anamorphic lenses for video but that can wait.
