    Beginner Magazines

I quite enjoy Black and White Photography https://www.blackandwhitephotographymag.co.uk/ I used to enjoy the British Journal of Photography, but it's NLA unless you subscribe. I quite enjoy Studies in Photography https://studiesinphotography.com/ Edited by one of the lecturers when I was at...

    Amateur Photographer Forums

Similarly in the world of Land Rover ownership, the various magazines had forums (fora?), which were a mine of information. All gone now :(

Is this normal for a Coolscan?

Coolscans really benefit from a service. The mirror and optics get dusty.

5x4 pinhole of my neighbour's house

I got this as part of a deal on some other gear, it's quite nicely made. I believe the pinhole is laser-cut and is 4 leaf clover shaped.

    Beginner Shooting a Charity Event

I have covered a few fund-raising dinners, Burns supper and the life for a charity here in Scotland. Sis in law was the CEO. It started as just being one of the guests who brought his camera. Next thing sis in law and a couple of her colleagues were asking if they could use my pictures in their...

5x4 pinhole of my neighbour's house

This isn't an especially interesting photograph, beyond it's my first ever attempt with a pinhole camera. A 5x4 pinhole camera no less. Ilford Delta100, 11 seconds at f233. Developed in Rodinal.

Kirstyn, in a polka dot dress.

Lately I've been making myself work in digital, and in colour. This is my long suffering wife, Kirstyn. The wall behind here is a 300 year old house in our local park. I liked the contrast between the colour of her dress and the wall, also the contrast between her soft skin, the dress fabric...

    Pub Gig

Depending on the camera and how it handles high ISO, crank the ISO up. Also lock the WB, AWB will be constantly hunting in that variable lighting. To my eyes, the coloud shots are under exposed. Maybe tickle with a little flash? Not enough to obliterate the lighting.

    First camera and latest camera

My first camera, a Kodak Instamatic when I was a wee boy. It dissapeared into the mists of time but I found an identical one in a charity shop a couple of years back :) First SLR, a Pentax K1000. Still have it over forty years later and still use it sometimes. Latest SLR, a Canon EOD 5D Mkiii...

Wide angle lens for cropped camera

Before I went FF, I was using Sigma 10-20 on a 70D. Rather liked that wee lens.

Some pics after a 20 year absence

Just curious. Were you creative in another area before discovering photography?

I grew up in household of DIY and engineering, dad was an engineer with the RN, on nuclear submarines. Creativity wasn't exactly nurtured, wasn't discouraged either. I started taking photographs 42 years ago, my dad helped me get my cub scout photographer badge. I developed the 35mm TriX shot...

    Environmental portrait of a Welder

That's a good point, in the analogue video days I often shot welders, the company I worked for had a number of clients whos business involved welding. It was fairly widely known and accepted that professional/TV cameras using CCDs were OK with welding arc (Sony DXC3000, BVW400 etc. Presumably...
