Im off out on the MTB, I'm thinking do I bring my camera, any tips on forest photography? Its a pine forset so not much in the way of interesting trees , there is an old air base there (rendlesham) but its fenced off, I might be able to get interesting shots of it though, but if not, any tips on how to eek interesting shots out of a pine forest?

Watch out for the bears and UFOs. ;)

I would look closely at log piles, damp patches, forest floor and undergrowth for interesting fungi, insects and plants so a macro lens would be a must for me.

A speedlight might be a worthwhile addition to your bag too.

Have fun. :pics:

Take fence cutters :D

On a more serious note, sometimes looking up can reveal interesting compositions in a forest, especially a pine one with the tall straight trees. Portrait orientation can help, maybe even consider a vertical stitch?

What camera are you taking? I find that taking too much camera kit can spoil the ride, so usually just take my X100V.

My advice is to look for details, or leading lines. Just scrolling through my Flickr, this was the first "forest" type photo I have take on an MTB ride.

Some tree fungi about at the moment here, thats always good for a shot. Maybe something dark and moody through the trees?

I know it's a stupid digression, but why is it MTB - does that mean Moun Tain Bike? Not Motor Torpedo Boat. Shouldn't it just be MB? It's still a TLA, but Two instead of Three. Feel free to ignore my old man ruminating.

We use MTB so as not to be mistaken for them there road cyclists, who ride MB's or monkey bikes.

*runs for cover*

That was a hard ride, full camera bag, really hot but also very humid, no breeze so I just ended up sweating lots.

I couldnt get close enough to the air base to take any decent shots but got a few through the fence, didnt get much in the forest either, cycled the UFO trail and took a few of the UFO. On the way home however a big , old dead tree caught my eye, so I pulled over and went into the forest to find a very old part of the forest, loads of old dead trees, no paths, a bit eerie but magical, so I hung around , explored what I could and took a few shots , I also got eaten by horse flies, I'll try and upload some after a cold beer and some dinner, Im famished!

These are some unedited shots, some are HDR. There are aliens in the trees.

I think these are my faves, Mother tree picking up one of her children and the lady in the forest basking in glory.

I have been riding for years, and never really thought about that. I have always thought that it is strange to call most of my riding "mountain biking", as I rarely ride on mountains.
I'd never take my camera MTBing ... I crashed far too often!! If your not crashing, you're not trying hard enough ;):exit:
I've had some decent crashes with my camera kit in my rucksack, although these days I don't take my full kit, unless it is a specific photography ride.

Good point. I got my Panosonic P&S to carry around like that. You find somethingyou like you can alwaysgo back again with more camera. My Panosonic rides in a holster in my belt. My DSLR would ride on a strap around my neck! Well part time, rest of the time I'd simply hold it in my hands.

Got an after though. Used to go to pointing dog field trials a lot and shoot dog's. Carrying around my DSLR was a pain after awhile. So, I got a harness for carrying a set of binoculars, Goes over both shouer'sa and hold the camera at belt level. Problem with it was the straps were for some reason made of elastic. Walking the camera bounced all over. Gave it some thought and removed the elastic and replaced it with 1" nylon straps. Just changed out the elastic and it got pretty easy to carry around the camera!

W R U T A? :)

Tie some string on the outmost tree then unravel it as you go into the forest
That way you can follow it and know you can get out again ;)

I suppose it should really be MtB, which is how it was often written 20+ years ago. Also called ATB or VTT.
