2 Flash Heads on Stand?

Today, I was looking out of my office window and notice something flashing across the road. On closer inspection, it was a photographer taking head & shoulder shots of an employee with the company sign behind her. I couldn't see what make camera he was using, but he took '00s of shots. What intrigued me was, he had a black light stand with some sort of little bracket on the top and 2 flash heads - the kind you usually have on the top of your camera - sitting side by side. He had a trigger device in the hotshoe. Then he produced what looked lik a Black brolly and when he opened it, it became a softbox with a handle. Ummmm! I thought, as all the Friday afternoon traffic was hurtling past him. Was it all necessary. Any of you peeps know what the set up was? The only benefit that I could see, was no wires!

Sounds like a portable version of a studio head and softbox. Hot shoe flashes are mostly pretty weedy compared to a good studio head, so doubling up is most likely just to get a decent amout of light through the softbox. I know my canon 580 is pretty beefy for a on board but if I was to stick it inside a real softbox, the output wouldn't be much at all.

Plus even two hot shoe jobbies will still be far smaller and lighter to lug about than one studio head would be even if you could power it.

Flashguns in softboxes can work upto about 6 foot. Two flash guns means double the power so it's perfectly useable outside. I'll find a link for the brackets later on as I've seen them on flickr quie a bit lately.

Was it necessary? Depends whether the photographer wanted contraollable creative lighting or a straight on blast of light direct from the camera. If you have a look at how much elinchrom charge for their portable power packs you'll see why they went down the routs of strobe lightin instead.

Her ya go the Brewer Bracket. And here's another use for it Linky

Thanks for the links. However, I can't imagine how the Brewer Bracket works though. How would they sit side-by-side on that? me thinks it's too early on a Sunday morning to understand. I will come back later......:coat::LOL:

Like this linky

You use little hotshoe mounts bolted to the bracket for attaching the flashes.
