An oeuvre with a certain scope, weight, and pertinence ...

Interesting random post :)

I have this on my bookshelf (nearly 800 Pages) and a £20 new or down to a fiver s/h. Other than the introduction it's a facsimile of Curtis's 20 volumes of photographs

I have a biography about Curtis somewhere but can't find it !

I also have a copy of "South with the Endurance: Shackelton's Antarctic Expedition 1914-1917, The photographs of Frank Hurley. It's multi-authored and published by Ted Smart

300 pages and 30cm x 30cm and they seem to be available s/h from less than a fiver to near a £100.

As well as the story and the photographs, there is a technical chapter on Polar photography and the equipment Hurley used. And a chapter about Hurley's other photography..

I had forgotten I had these, and how good they were, until your post, but now prompted to revisit them - thanks.

I have Ponting's book containing his photographs from the Scott expedition, first edition too. Wonderful images. I'd love to see his book and/or work from his tour of Japan in the early 1900';s though, I'm not sure if it can be found now except perhaps in the RPS archives.
