Another "what lens" for Silverstone...

Morning all, bit of a trifle here.

I dont really shoot motorsports so my FL's are not long at all. Im there next weekend for the GT Championships so there is going to be a chance to go to the garages/pit walk so I have the 17-40L for that but at other points, I will be up in the Brooklands building/balcony section so should have a nice view but im stuck on the whole what lens.

In all honesty, I would say that a good shout would be the 70-200 and x2 TC for my 1D and crop when I need to...on the other hand, a 300/400 would be another option. Im limiting myself since I do not like the push/pull style lenses...The Sigma 120-300 could be an option but my panning is not the best but I reckon I could get away with it.

Any feedback?

For a frame filling shot you'll need something around 400mm.

Don't just sit in the stands, move about!

I could but im being invited as a guest so think it would be rude to leave everyone and wonder off

I think we are a little confused as to what you actually want to photograph?

Hospitality doesn't lend much scope for photography really...

Sorry, I think I should have put what could I get away with using. Hospitality doesnt lend a hand no but not sure if that means I can just bugger off and go for walkies up to the fence. Since my friend who is not interested in photography is coming and wont know anyone, I rather just shoot from the balcony.

Your friend may appreciate watching the race from different corners as well!

Indeed, spectator or photographer, everyone benefits from a good walk around the track.

A 70-200 with a 2x TC will give you pretty good coverage at Silverstone, I use that combo on a 5DII and I've never been in a situation where I'm desperate to get closer.

Back after the day. I dont do much panning but looking at it, 70-200 IS would have been a nice lens. I got a good result with my 85mm and cropped quite well.

Sadly unless I had a high vantage point, the fence was a pain to get around so stayed put and shot from our balcony. Overall, with a little panning practice, I was happy. :)

As mentioned, would be a nice idea to move to different corners so maybe work it for next time.
