Hi,

Anyone well up on the way ebay/paypal work and on the range of Canon DSLR`s?? Could do with some help.

Have been looking for a 5D back up for a while, price for good condition on ebay seems to be around the £7-800 mark.

Spotted one quite late on that said Ex condition 5D, but the spec where you fill in the fields provided said something like `6-6.9 megapixels.
Part of the spec that the seller had obviously got from Canon website and posted said .......

Product MPN

MPN EOS5DKIT24105

Key Features
Camera Type SLR/Professional
Resolution 13.3 Megapixel
Image Sensor Type CMOS
Weight 0.81 kg

In the sellers write up he describes some of the features.....

"Features of this camera are ; Triggered from Live View Mode, HD video capture allows users to shoot uninterrupted at full 1080 resolution at 30fps – for amazing quality footage with outstanding levels of detail and realism.

Compact, lightweight with environmental protection, EOS 5D successor boasts a newly designed Canon CMOS sensor, with ISO sensitivity up to 25,600 for shooting in near dark conditions.

Lots more to be said , the list could go on forever specific specs are above for your information.

YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED WITH THIS EXTRAORDINARY PRODUCT."

When asked, seller said he had had accepted the wrong picture when it was offered by the system when adding the item, but it was the 5D MK11 he was selling (although he did call it `mark2`.

Anyway, I purchased it for just under £800 and know that if it is a Mk11 in excellent condition it is a bargain. Just a little concerned that something else might arrive based on the different specs on the listing.

Seller refused cash on collection, which is OK because it wasn`t agreed before purchase and wants payment today before sending camera special delivery.

Would pay through paypal, no idea how good their protection is for this sort of money.

Am not bothered about a neg feedback, seller has 100% on 70+transactions and is in UK.

What would you do?

Thanks in advance.

I would triple check its a canon5d mark2. Are you happy to pay this for a mark1?? Seems a little fishy if the seller doesn't really know what he is selling..

Can you provide a link to the auction?

To be perfectly honest this sounds very dodgy. I can`t think of any reason the seller wouldn`t accept cashon collection except that the camera didn`t meet the description or he didn`t have it at all.:(

I also don`t think there is any way in the world that anyone would sell the mark 2 for that price.

Any pics of the camera? Can you post a link?

I think that the fact that they won't accept collection is fishy enough, surely?:wacky:

Have you paid for this already? If you havn`t, I wouldn`t. Insist on cash and go and look. If the seller was genuine, he wouldn`t mind.
It`s really your choice but there`s no way in hell that I would pay for this unseen.

don't touch with barge pole, just run away

My initial thought, but hate the thought of missing a bargain.... :)

There are lots of reasons why someone might be selling an item that they don`t know much about, isn`t there..... ??

Anyone know.....
a) If paying through paypal you are given the sellers address.
b) What are the chances of getting a refund from PP if it`s a scam or the wrong item and seller won`t play ball?

if you're that worried, ask for a picture of the serial number sticker, that should tell you what the product is wont it ?

i bought a 430EXII off ebay with "paypal only, no collection" with a picture of a 430EX... not everyone on ebay is out to scam you, and people do genuinely make mistakes. it might be a clearance company or bailiff company trying to reclaim debt money by selling off belongings - they wont know what it is, and will just go "Canon 5d - google images - that one - ebay."

Email paypal and see if his address is approved or not.

If it is, you should be OK, let them know you may be buying a suspect item and ask them where you stand.

I was fraudulently taken £300 through payapl, and I got every penny back within a week.

Email them and see where you stand.

One of the reasons the info might seem wrong, i.e for a 5D 6-6.9 mp. is because ebay offers automatic camera specifications that lists everything. Sometimes its not accurate as I know having just listed my 450D.

This could be a hi-jacked account or anything. Leave well alone I say. If it were me it could be CASH ON COLLECTION ONLY, as I said before, if the guy was genuine he wouldn`t mind.

there are reasons why........but high end camera kit? its not the sort of thing you have lying around if you don't know how to use it, they would be atleast able to tell you why they didn't know about this

I very nearly got scammed on a camera from ebay a few years ago. I was literally about to send the money when I got an email from another guy who had been scammed by the same seller. Lucky escape. This sounds like a scam to me too. Run away.

It could of course be stolen - hence why he doesn't know what it is - and isn't worried about what it sells for... It may not be an actual scam... but if the goods do turn out to be stolen - not good for those that lost it, and not good for you if ever you register it, or try and make a claim on it, or get a repair on it yourself in future, as it may get picked up as stolen, and you'll lose it...

Just viewed the listing, not hard to find.
You already know that your going to be taken one way or the other, if it looks to good to be true it usually is.
Walk away

I found it too - he wants to send a £2k camera by first class unrecorded post? He really doesn't value this at all... Doesn't say why he's selling (could be a she of course) and has only sold the body? All seems a bit strange...

Sorry to clarify - if you look at the users ebay history - not sold anything else camera related... just fashion and a faulty x-box...

He's also sold a new Ipod with no box or cables - if you check his recently completed auctions...

The ad for the 5d doesn't mention a box, cables or instructions - so I'm guessing you're bidding just on a body - pretty suspicious don't you think?

He has said by pm he intended to send it by ecial delivery.

Sent you a PM with the Ipod details in it...

This camera looks like it'll be very 'HOT'. Bargain price yes - but as an opinion (just an opinion) not a 100% legit sale...

Yes, hence why I have not paid yet and am here asking for help/advice.

Thanks for all the replies.

Have asked for some clarification from seller.

Spoke to ebay who say that I would have no problem getting my money back via Paypal if it turned out to be a scam or wrong item sent. Not sure if that would also cover item that turned out to be stolen though.

Fully expecting communication from seller to stop abrubtly.

Watch this space.

do you really want the hassle though?

The sales talk is very vague and tbh it doesn't sound like much of a bargain even if it does turn out to exist be legit.

Have you asked all the normal questions, you know, where/when was it bought, serial number,do they have the box etc, have they got any lenses for it?

Why would a `legit` 5D Mk11 in excellent condition not be a bargain at £800?

Have just asked most of those questions, which is why I am not expecting a reply.

it would be, but as the saying goes if it looks to good to be true it probably is. Its possible the guy mis labeled his listing, but if you did that wouldn't you just stop the auction and relist - save yourself the best part of a grand?

I'd be surprised if you get a response to those questions

Hugh

If £800 means nothing to you, then go take the risk. Otherwise take a walk round the block questioning your sanity as you go - and then do the right thing - forget it.
