Yes
can you apple airport extreme as a stand alone wirless hub / printer hub

i currently have a good netgear router but my printer is not wireless and is no where near a pc so was looking at this but bit unsure if it will work this way

what i want to do is plug the usb printer into it and and use it as a wireless unit or do i have to have it sat next to the phone line and use it as a wireless router

Yes, that should be fine. Being used to host printers is one of the things the Airport Extreme was designed for. I can't offer much help specifically, though, as I don't have a printer. ^_^;

Depending on your existing WiFi setup, and the model, using the Airport Extreme may offer a nice benefit - later (since around 2007?) models support the 5GHz band as well as the rather busy 2.4GHz band. If you're in the habit of shuffling large volumes of data around wirelessly, you should be able to see real world throughput of 10-20Mbytes/s over 5GHz 802.11n, even in a neighborhood packed with 2.4GHz WiFi devices.
