Thanks Paul. Stereograms - that's something I've never tried. Mind you, that might be because I can't really seem them when I look at examples, cross-eyed or whatever.

It is Acanthus, for example see here and here. I think it might be Acanthus mollis (but please don't take my word for it - I am seriously deficient when it comes to identifying things, not just flowers, but anything).
