Batteries ~ Canon and third party?

Hi all

The battery on my pocket sized Canon S120 now just about holds charge for a day if I am lucky..................worse bit is even if charged it drains oh so rapidly i.e. unusable :(

FWIW it appears by a date stamp on it to have been made in Feb 2015 so as a smaller battery perhaps just "old"

It is the NB-6LH the genuine Canon is £36

For my dSLR I have in the past stuck with genuine but this one camera I am wondering about best brand aftermarket makes?

What is your experience for these smaller batteries and which make would you suggest and where to buy it/them?

TIA :)

PS I let it fully discharge in the camera and I am charging it again........................shall see whether that has helped 'recondition' it??? But the question is valid, which one to buy as the replacement/backup battery?

I have had some aftermarket batteries that have been as good as original or even better. Since I got some of the newer Canon camera bodies, which don't seem to recognise most of the aftermarket ones, I've got a bunch of genuine Canon ones. I bought a Hahnel battery for my Canon G3 compact and it outdoes the originals that were double the price. 7 Day Shop are good online but any high street camera shop should stock them.

I have a few after market batteries for my GX7 (I'm guessing these would be considered 'small') and have found they work as well if not better than the Panasonic original.

Interestingly Hahnel do not appear to list batteries for the S120 !

Typical that the one I recommend doesn't make one for your camera. I've just had a google and found this though http://www.ebatterys.co.uk/canon-nb...f5q2vh0HkJV_279zAtHkmA3KH3Lo_avEaAnWxEALw_wcB which might help. I've had all sorts of batteries from this place and never had any problems with any.

Thanks for the linky.

Interesting that it "looks" like a genuine Canon one but this phrase is IMO the kicker "This genuine battery has been tested by our professional team for safety and performance. It is 100% Compatible for your machine,We provide 3 year warranty for this battery."

Yes, it is a genuine battery....aren't they all 'genuine batteries..not a lump of plastic that looks like a battery.....' but they do not explicitly state it is a Canon product. They IMO are passing off their 'replacement' model as a Canon and that is sad and arguably illegal.

PS I know they say buyer beware but the reviews I have found fall between two extremes the praise ones are oh so positive but the negative ones damning.................I know which ones i would rely on ;)

Even if they're compatible batteries and not as the photo shows they should still work ok. I've had batteries off them for many different Canon cameras, for me and friends, and not had a problem with any of them.

Get one from Duracell direct it will work just fine. Just checked and they are £14.89 plus p&p.

I always used Phottix in my 5d2 and 1d3

I have a PowerShot SX280 but it takes the same battery.

Canon originals aside:

7dayshop batteries: bought several at different times. Fine to start with but after several months of use they go from full to empty in seconds.

TopMax higher capacity (1000mAh): Bought from Amazon and they are holding up well so far.

As compatibles they should advertise and declare them properly...............passing them off on the website and then sending a different product is wrong and illegal under UK law "mis-descriptions act" ??? If they do indeed sell fakes (copies of Canon or any other brands then illegality of another level!) I am glad you have had trouble free usage but I would rather use a supplier or manufacturer that I would have recourse to if there was a problem and that one does not inspire such confidence!

Never heard of TopMax but 7dayshop does have a good reputation AFAIK ?

Last battery I got for my 1d3 from 7day sadly lasted only a few charges.

Have you taken it up with them if so what was the result?

Not when you're based in China. If you base your business in China you can do what the hell you like and nobody with ever bother you.

Granted but 'they' claim to have a UK 'office' and presumably staff (and stock???) so maybe Trading Standards that covers that location should pay them a visit???

I guarantee you there is no UK presence.
We are up against the same kind of websites in our business (laptop chargers and batteries). There are dozens of China based websites pretending to be UK companies but none are and addresses either don't exist or they have a Uk company handling returns at a central warehouse.

The address provided by this website is a warehouse that just handles returns and is used by a number of China based businesses included a website selling counterfeit dresses.

If Canon are happy to use 3rd party batteries in their cameras then so am I.
