Beasties by the pond

The top one is a male Sphaerophoria (hoverfly) to go any further, you need to examine the male genitalia under a microscope - so not doable to species from photos. The second one is a male Bibio sp. (Bibionidae - St Marks Flies) - you can see it is this genus because that big chunky spur at the end of the front tibia is visible. There are several species which have these rather milky wings. The bottom one is also a Bibio - this time a female, again you can see the distictive shape of the front tibia.

Wow, gosh, will need to look them up and see what they spend their life doing. Thanks for the very detailed reply. I’m always intrigued when I find new insects, could spend hours watching them and taking photos
