Groovy that, Ian!
Mining bees are solitary bees. There may be lots of them going in and out of holes close together but they solitary as in they act as individuals.Cheers for the help Alf, defo not a Solitary Bee, it's part of a hive/nest that they have made in some steel railings over a brook, they are entering through a small hole at each end of the railings, but Mining Bee is a possibility, they are about 15mm in length
Great BiF with clear complimentary background.
As for the bee species........with 267 UK species I wonder if anyone can ID it???

I put the photo on FB and there's a UK Bee's, wasps and ants group. Sorry for nicking your photo but it was the only way. If you have Facebook there's so many groups to help out if you need an id.Well done, apparently it is endangered, how did you get it id'd?

You can also buy them!
Whether that is a good idea or not is another matter. What do people think? I am tempted, I might go on a diet to justify the expense to my wife. It is 50 £1 bars of chocolate to buy one!
