Bee

Great shot Ian
Some sort of solitary bee probably and andrena mining bee but I am unable to iD it.

Groovy that, Ian!

Cheers for the help Alf, defo not a Solitary Bee, it's part of a hive/nest that they have made in some steel railings over a brook, they are entering through a small hole at each end of the railings, but Mining Bee is a possibility, they are about 15mm in length :)

Mining bees are solitary bees. There may be lots of them going in and out of holes close together but they solitary as in they act as individuals.
There will also be parasites going in and out too.
Only honey bees and bumble bees are communal as far as I know.

The lack of hairs on the body and legs says to me it is male.

Edit

Well done, apparently it is endangered, how did you get it id'd?

You can also buy them!
Whether that is a good idea or not is another matter. What do people think? I am tempted, I might go on a diet to justify the expense to my wife. It is 50 £1 bars of chocolate to buy one!

I put the photo on FB and there's a UK Bee's, wasps and ants group. Sorry for nicking your photo but it was the only way. If you have Facebook there's so many groups to help out if you need an id.
