For a couple of weekends I've been trying (without success) to get a shot of early morning mist rising of a local reservoir. I saw the shot I wanted one day when I hadn't got my camera with me. I'm hoping that tomorrow morning might have the right conditions ie: warm water, cooler air, no wind, am I right with that? Also there are a lot of midges around the banks of the reservoir that make a beeline for either me or the camera and spoil the shots are there any tips for drawing them to me so I can stand well away from the camera and use a radio trigger?

Warm still water, hot day, cold night, humid, high pressure and clear night.
All those things contribute to mist.

Having said that, you can be really lucky and get all of the above, get up at 02-00, drive for hours for this carefully researched shot and there be no bloody mist at all and a really annoying duck spoiling your shot!

As for the midges you'll be best off right next to your camera with a rocket blower to blow them off as soon as they land. In my experience there's not much that will stop them landing on your front element.
