Looking to go to watch RIAT off base this year.
Any suggestions for the best places that would avoid the traffic jams?
Also, what time would I need to get there on Saturday or Sunday (assuming that the campsites / farmers fields get busy)

Cheers

Rhymes farm or Totterdown farm I think are the usual places.
See: http://forums.airshows.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=21478

Last year the memorial flight staged themselves low over Shaw Forest, West Swindon before heading into their run. Lanc crew waving to everyone below.
Only had my phone camera on me :(

The other place to go which is always empty is on the hill fort at Broad Blunsdon, the aircraft come overhead to make their turns...

There's a field in marston meysey that charge £5 at gate and you can park up and view everything they do in the air show from there!

Last year I don't both Furzey Hill and Rhymes Farm. Rhymes is smack bang next to the taxi way - so close you could see the colours of the pilots eyes!! (Slight exaggeration there!!). Plus the aircraft fly RIGHT overhead. Quite an experience to have a Euro fighter fly directly over you on full reheat!
Furzey Ok if you want to see the planes from a distance, but it's not a huge distance, it's very close to the action still.
And there's more land there, so there was a lot of families there with the kids kicking balls around etc...

I personally would recommend Rhymes, so close to the taxi way and the buzz of aircraft right over head - and some different angles to photograph of course.

I'm going to Rhymes on Saturday...

Oh and btw, I got to Rhymes really late last year, flying had already started and there was still plenty of room.

Andy - what was the traffic like get to and away from Rhymes?
I'll be heading in from Oxford direction.

Just a heads up, cirencester side has many roads closed redirected due to resurfacing if your coming in from this side! Traffic is horrendous at the moment!

What has sold out, Rhymes? I didn't find traffic was an issue, but then I arrived well after everyone else did!!

Got charged 30quid! At rhymes farm :\bit up from 10 quid advertised:(
Are they charging per car or per person in the car?

I'm not able to make it today due to family commitments, but hoping to go along tomorrow.
Would like to hear from those that go "off base" that are going today - where, cost, facilities, etc

I got in for 15 quid, had a fantastic day.
Display is right over you, so great for photo taking or just watching and enjoying the show.
They have toilets / ice cream / food van so you are pretty well catered for.
Get there early as the whole field was full pretty quickly.

at ryhems? maybe they charge 15 per person? (was me and my dad)

the food looked ok and was priced ok, loo's where clean

the guy who parked next to us had a kid and paid £30 too
so get ya kid to hide when you arrive :D

It'll be interesting to see how they're going to police that!

Trouble is after Shoreham last year the new rules coming out means that there will be alot more changes to come out relating to so called Naughty fields. That is the reason Rhymes is not opening this year. A piece taken from Fighter Control today.
http://www.fightercontrol.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=287&t=130400. It is about Shawbury Friday basically roads near the base giving views will have restrictions placed on them and no people to watch from certain areas or the Display will be delayed or even cancelled. So looks like new rules on staging Airshows mean places like the sheep field at Yeovilton and the field outside Duxford will be shut to the public during the flying displays
