Beginner Canon 6D or 77D Camera Change?

Hi all,
I currently have a Canon 6D with a 16-35mm F/4 L Lens and it's great. Unfortunately I have to downgrade due to finances and I am intending to buy a Canon 77D with 18-55mm USM Lens. The real question I want to ask is:

As the camera has 24.2mp over the 6D's 20.2mp, will I notice the difference in image quality? Will the 77D be better in quality than the Canon 6D. Is the Canon 6D outdated and is the 77D therefore better but at the cost of a smaller sensor?

I may sound quite new to all of this and I am a new member of the forum.

Look forward to hearing from you all.

Kind regards,

James

Not at all.

It won't be the less pixels where you notice the difference, maybe the dynamic range but that's pretty crap on the 6D anyway.

Do you have to stay with DSLR?

I've just moved from a 6D to Olympus and I'm really impressed.

Just to add to that, yes the Canon 6D is outdated but then so is the 5D MK3 but it doesn't stop it from being a worse camera than it was at launch.

Don't sweat the small stuff.

You will lose IQ at high ISO`s but nothing much else to worry about really.

Top 77d, bottom 6d. Both 12,800 JPEG crops.
RAW is a similar story, the 6d visibly much cleaner.
Results are similar at 6400, the 6d clearly cleaner by a long way.
People can bash the 6d all they want, it still beats crop sensors by far.

How much are you hoping to 'save' by making this switch out of interest? I can't imagine it is much at all. Are you sure it's worth it?

Both are fine cameras. My iPhone 7 is outdated now, but that means very little to me and my usage.

Wasn't bashing the 6D, far from it. I loved it.

However it is outdated as the MK2 is out.

This makes it an old model.

I have had an offer for £1200 for the Canon 6D and 16-35mm Lens together. The Canon 77d with kit lens is £690. So a saving of £510. Any thoughts on this? I notice that some people say I won't notice that much difference only at High ISO's.

At the end of the day the main difference is the crop sensor but then again it has 4 more megapixels, will I notice this difference?

Thank you for all the comments so far!

Take the money! That is a ridiculous sum for the body and lens!
In fact, tell me who is offering that and I may well sell mine ,.....

£1200 for a Canon 6D and a 16-35mm F/4 L Lens? I bought these new together at around £1500 about a year and a half ago. Bearing in mind the lens is priced at £900.00 at Jessops.
Do you think £1200 is a good selling price then?

Thank you for the reply!

Absolutely it is! As above, if you actually have someone willing to pay that then bite their arm off.

If, however that is what you think you'll sell it for, you may want to rethink.

Edit - I was thinking of a different lens. Still not a bad price.

Mainly architectural photography is what I use my camera for and I have a 50mm for portraits occasionally.

Thanks!

So is the kit lens on a 77D going to hack it??? its only the equivalent of about 28mm FF at the wide end (compared with your 16-35 on FF that's a big difference. You would need to be looking at the 10-18, 10-20 or 10-22 on a crop to replicate the FOV of the 16-35

So I guess in summary in terms of actual image quality there will be a noticeable difference even though the 77D has more Megapixels.

Megapixels isn't the only factor that dictates image quality. Pixel size, sensor size and lens quality will also play a big part. The 77D is a good camera and more "up to date" than the 6D Mk1, but you're limiting yourself by going down to the kit lens from the L-series you currently have. Only you can decide if that's worth it.

Given your photographic interest, going for the 77D plus kit lens, will be a downgrade in IQ (taking lens into account) and FOV. You will also loose the ability to shoot with less noise at higher ISO.

If you added a s/h Wide Angle lens to the 77D you would reduce the savings to around £300

I'd look to make the financial savings elsewhere and keep your existing kit
