Canon 6D or 77D Camera Replacement

Hi all,

I currently have a Canon 6D with a 16-35mm F/4 L Lens and it's great. Unfortunately I have to downgrade due to finances and I am intending to buy a Canon 77D with 18-55mm USM Lens. The real question I want to ask is:

As the camera has 24.2mp over the 6D's 20.2mp, will I notice the difference in image quality? Will the 77D be better in quality than the Canon 6D. Is the Canon 6D outdated and is the 77D therefore better but at the cost of a smaller sensor?

I may sound quite new to all of this and I am a new member of the forum.

Look forward to hearing from you all.

Kind regards,

James

Welcome to the forums.

I've just jumped the other way, from crop to full frame and I find the difference night and day. Full frame by a mile.

I jumped from a 7D, which didn't have great image quality in fairness but I also have a Fuji X-T10 and that has great image quality but even so, the full frame beats it hands down, especially in low light, shadow recovery, noise performance and dynamic range.

6Ds are known for having great image quality, personally, I think you'd be dissapointed. It has been uprgraded now to the Mk2 but I know a few people with Mk1s and they swear by them. The focusing system on the 6D isn't great but it's more than adequate and it may have a slowish frame rate but as far as image quality goes, it's not second to many.

(ask a mod to put this in the "Equipment Section" for you, you'll get a better response) (y)

Thank you so much for the information, this is really helpful, out of interest, I have checked out your blog and your photos are incredible, may I ask as to what editor/filters/software you use to edit your images?

Thank you, very kind.

My workflow tends to be, take picture, then Lightroom, out of habit it then goes into Photoshop as that's where I check levels etc.

Since going full frame in September, I've not been using filters but I have recently bought a set that I'm intending to use soon, if the weather plays ball.

Thanks I recently have got Lightroom but was wondering how to use it. I know you can run basic filters, but ideally I would like to become a pro at it using gradient maps to achieve images like the attached. Really giving a strong HDR. I am unsure how to do this, is there a tutorial website that might be useful?

HDR is a contentious subject but if it's for you, then go for it. It's not for everything though.

You Tube is a good bet for tutorials..

I guess you have calculated it all, but are you really going to save money selling the 6D and buying a 77D?

One thing to consider is that a 18mm lens on the crop sensor 77D will give a field of view equivilent to around 29mm on the full frame 6D. Not sur if that’s an issue for you but if you take a lot at 16mm then you are going to find the 77D very different.
