Can't access NAS

When I try to access my NAS through explorer this is what I get. It's same result if I use Back4all. I can connect through Synology assistant and set things up, not a problem.

I've tried a few Googled method with no result so any help would be appreciated.

NAS Synology DS220j

Edition Windows 11 Home
Version 23H2
Installed on ‎11/‎01/‎2024
OS build 22631.4037
Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.22700.1027.0

In addition to the above, ensure that the SMB (Server Message Block) protocol is enabled on your Synology NAS. Go to Control Panel > File Services > SMB/AFP/NFS on your NAS and verify that SMB is enabled.

first thing is , follow the troubleshooting method

1. has it worked perfectly before?
2. Any changes to your setup?

Also go to windows features and make sure it looks like this
smb.jpg

It is also possible that a windows update has changed the above, which would probably stop NAS access if it is an old NAS, or using the old protocol

You definitely do NOT need SMB1 to access a Synology NAS, in fact you should avoid SMB 1 completely unless you have a VERY specific reason to enable it. SMB1 is highly insecure. It has many exploits/vulnerabilities .

That depends on the age of the NAS, my Synology only supports SMB1, nothing more recent, so I DO have to use SMB1.
Obviously I do not have any of the functionality which opens it to access outside of my LAN enabled.

The OP said the nas is a year 2020 model, so it definitely does not need SMB1, mine is a 2018 year model and it defaults to SMB2 and Large MTU as the minimum standard.

Yes, more recent models do indeed support SBM2, and you should use that if available - but that does not mean that EVERY Synology NAS can do so - there are still older models working happily, for which SMB2 support was never added.

I'd agree with the recommendation to try using the IP address to try and narrow down the problem, the error suggests it can't resolve the name syn01 for some reason.

just looking at the origonal image
the network address is invalid
are you sure your IP address is correct?
do a ping and check the NAS to double check the IP

Thanks all for the suggestions, I'll have another look later and let you know. (y)

You need to map a drive to set up Windows credentials for normal Explorer access. If you right-click on This PC and select Map Network Drive you should get the following screen
map network drive.jpg
Enter the name of the folder you want to map then select Connect using different credentials and enter the ID and password you've set up on the NAS and Finish. You should then be able to browse the NAS with Explorer.

I've tried all the suggestions here and a few more (even from Synology) and it still won't connect. I tried it on my laptop with the same result.
I'll try another make and see how I go with that.

Thanks all for your help and advice (y)

Have you tried pinging the ip address to make sure it’s even accessible on your network?

If not it could be failed hardware, faulty port or cable.
The OP said they could connect via Synology Assistant, so it is accessible on the network.
My Synology is quite old, so the UI may well have changed, but with mine the Synology Assistant does a network scan (I'm guessing it's a UDP broadcast which the NAS responds to giving it's IP), then lists any units it finds, together with their name, IP, status, etc.
You can select one and click 'Connect' which launches the browser interface to the NAS (via IP and Port).
You can then log into the NAS and perform administrative tasks.
If that all works, then the hardware is OK.

They still have a similar for finding a Synology unit which I assume the OP was using to connect. Their initial error message shows them trying to access the unit by name rather than IP address and the error suggests their PC is not finding that name hence the suggestions to try using the IP address then they could try pinging that name and see if they get anything back. It's difficult to diagnose when the OP just replies nothing works, as you say the unit must at least be online on the network ok.

I pinged both name and IP address and both are seen on the network

I still think it's a problem with Windows credentials as I get the same with my Asustor NAS.

It's now sorted.

I tried, as you advised, to map the drive but it didn't want to know. So I deleted absolutely everything Snology related in Windows and factory reset the NAS drive and started again.

Installed Synology assistant and setup the NAS unit. I then mapped the drive as I did before and, low and behold, this time it worked. It's now rattling away backing up all my precious photos and documents.

Thank you all for yours tips and advice, I'm now a happy bunny. :)
