I tried to think of something other than "the bleeding obvious" so it was out with the macro lens.
I have ( ash) leaves in waiting, the strong tip should open, but should it fail there are 2 others ( just visible) ready to jump in.
They may even open along with the strong bud, to protect, but they will drop off once the strong bud is totally opened.

Did you mean Bonsai? yes it is.
keeping them semi protected they bud early.
The trouble comes when its a very hard late frost though

It was lit by flash and as you that brings out all the little winkles, I guess that's why it looks metallic

Cheers Michael I do the basics in CS5
There is prepping first & still ( cleaning up) work to do after though.
CS5 Square the image either by cropping or resize by un checking constrain proportions, flip the image 180 degrees ( or your'll get the sky on the inside) filter Distort > polar coordinates.

Google "Small Planets" there maybe an option for your software.
