Week 1 - Accommodation by cw318is, on Flickr

This is the missus's handbag which can and will swallow anything you need it to. When we go out not only does it take all her stuff but will accommodate my phone, cigerettes, lighter, house keys etc etc. How accommodating, and it was the first thing that came to mind when the theme was announced.

Hiya Caleb,

Well here is wishing you good luck for this 52 and well done on the first theme, I think you have it 'in the bag' there

I love the colours, composition and DOF, and sorry TinaC, have to disagree with the crop as I think it adds to the placement, yet do agree with the excellent taste ;)

One question Caleb, does your OH smoke? If not then I take my hat off to her as that is very 'accommodating' carrying your ciggies and light for you :D

Here is looking forward to seeing your next 51 posts.

I have an idea for Week 1, I'm just putting it all into formulation now and hopefully will post my first soon.

Would be great if we could keep the motivation for all taking part in this new 52 and hopefully make it to the end of the year.

Well done so far

Cheers

Dawn :)

Colours are excellent.

How many cameras are there in the bag?

Thank you for your comments you lovely people :)

She has excellent taste (y)

I like teh composition but (there's always a but ;)) you could lop a third off the space above the post...

Hi Tina my original edit was cropped exactly like that, but I thought as Dawn did the bag was too central and the crop was too square (I have a thing about squares!) So went back to how it is now. I could have taken the shot with the 10-22 and had a bit more open space to the right but wouldn't have got the same DOF.

How many cameras are there in the bag?
At the moment just the one I think, her lil P+S, however in the past it has carried my Olympus mju850 and Lumix wide angle, and a 550D body that was going to be repaired!

One question Caleb, does your OH smoke?
Not any more but she used to, and carrying said cigerettes and lighter is the least she can do as I bought the bag!

Now off to have a look at everyone elses entries! I'm really going to enjoy this 52 (y)

Good man (y)

Hopefully will be posting my first of the 52 tonight, if I can get some peace and quiet in the house :D

This is going to be some challenge :)

Really like this photograph the colour and composition are spot on and a great take on the theme.

Week 2 - New by cw318is, on Flickr

I absolutely hate shaving, but at the same time I hate being whiskery, however nothing feels better then a brand new fresh out the packet razor blade with no pull or nicking. You can't beat a new blade. :)

I like the idea, but just wonder if it's perhaps a little unsaturated?

The dirty handle (no insult - they all end up like that, mine's the same!) does contrast well against the new blade, though.

Nice composition on week 2 Caleb... I do agree that it could handle a little more saturation (if you pardon the pun), but that's easy to resolve.

Good shot - look forwards to next week :)

Thanks for the comments guys, Tina it probably isn't as sharp as it could be - was nudging the iso to 400 (when 20D's really don't like anything above 100!) and ended up with a 1/30 shutter speed. Might try reshooting over the weekend when the light is a bit better.

The handles are a nightmare to keep clean, but I did dip in some soapy water about an hour before so it definately looked used with a clear new blade. Reminds me of Trigger - I've had the same broom for 20 years, its had 17 heads and 14 new handles!

On the saturation side, yes I probably did desaturate it a bit too far, obviously the bg is completely desaturated but the orange bit on the handle was too striking. Might have another play around with it over the weekend.

Hope you are all enjoying your 52's! :)

Hiya Caleb,

I like your thinking on this one. I think shaving a bit off the top, about midway between the top and the edge of the tile would look better.

I agree with the others about the saturation.

Love the bit of bokeh you have captured around the taps.

Well done.

Cheers

Dawn :)

I decided against reshooting because I didn't feel it was in the spirit of the challenge, however I have just re-PP'd the image putting in everyones comments. Didn't make things easy by not saving the psd file thats for sure!

I'm liking how the saturation has given it a bit of a tarnished metallic effect on the handle, that was a happy accident

(y) I like that, well done. :)

I like that even more now (y)

And its T minus a few hours and I'm getting an itchy trigger finger! Something to do with being housebound at the moment and not having any money :(

Anyway - I've decided to add a couple of rules for my 52;

  • I won't use a re-shoot card. Like my Wk2 entry which wasn't taken great I want to expand my PP skills, so I will allow myself to re-process an image but not reshoot it. If a re-shoot card gets pulled I'll randomly pick (or get the other half to pick) and I will come up with a brand new idea and image.
  • I will only use primes. In the spirit of getting creative, what better way then to think outside of using a zoom.
Got a feeling I may have just made a rod for my own back there but should be fun.

Come on Sarah it must be nearly time!

Teeeheeee Caleb, I know exactly what you mean, I am dying to know what the next theme is going to be! Today the weather is terrible and I am also housebound, so I am catching up on replying to some threads. I have even done a bit of post processing on some pics to catch up with my 365.

I should really set myself some 'rules' as such, mainly to just keep me in check, but then again I've never been one to stick to rules, so more than likely they would get broken sooner than I can hit the shutter release button

You have set yourself some challenging rules there, which I think makes following your project more interesting. I look forward to seeing your pics and progress.

Good luck with your week 3, when we find out what it is ..... come on SarahLee! Pleeeeaaaasssseee!

Cheers

Dawn :)

I'm pretty good with "most" rules so am I going to try and stick to these. Not long now Dawn!

Not long, what you on about? There are another 50 weeks to do

Good for you abiding by rules, I wish I had such discipline :p

Cheers

Well this one had me a bit stumped to start with but then I thought up a whole load of possibilities (mainly fuelled by a very fruity glass of red). The whole idea is to push your photographic ability and associated processes such as PP, so with that in mind I decided to have a go at landscapes as I've never really done any before. So skirting into the grey area of the theme;

Week 3 - Style Not a Style or Stile by cw318is, on Flickr

A countryside style, or rather a Stile. I had a 3 mile walk to get to this one (the only one I know of round here) and decided that I wanted the finished image to have an artistic quality to it - as in look a bit like a painting. The light was rubbish, the sky a horrible grey colour and the actual subject a bit dull so first off I brightened and hued the sky, built up the layers with an inverted overlay layer and a semi opaque top linear light top layer then flattened the whole thing and applied the crosshatch filter. Not 100% convinced it worked but it let me have a play in CS3 with things I normally leave well alone.

So, another 49 to go. Roll on Saturday night and good luck for everyone elses 52!

Looks like you are doing really well, although I am a little upset now, because I was going to go for a walk up the lane in a couple of days and take a picture of a stile. :bat: :bang: :dummy:

Have added you on flickr

I had the same idea when I was deciding what to do. But my last experience with a stile involved me falling from the very top and fracturing my elbow, so they're not my friends right now!

If you start from the bottom up, it looks good. Then you get to the bright white sky at the top, and it is very distracting. Maybe could have taken a couple of exposures and layered them? Quite like the cross hatching, though think it could maybe be toned down a little?

And I thought I'd be the only one who came up with the idea of finding a stile for the 52. The bottom half of the photo is great. Very arty. Not to keen from the top of the style upwards.
Love your other Photos though! (y)

I too went for a walk on Sunday looking for a stile. But with a 14 month old in tow and the weather closing in, i didn't get the shot i wanted. I like the picture as it is, but I don't see it as a photograph, if that makes sense  too much PP would be interseting to see the original in colour or even in B&W

really like week 2. nice DOF and bokeh.

week 1, nice clarity on the handbag, the backlighting is a bit harsh for my taste

Thanks for all the comments you wonderful people. I thought a stile would be quite unique but obviously not!

Is it a kissing gate? it used to be a stile thing I'm sure. Maybe I should retitle it as Not quite a style?

With the PP - sometimes I look at it and hate it, others I don't. Jury is still out I'm afraid but if nothing else its making me think a bit more about being creative. With the blue sky, strictly speaking its all wrong but I thought it kindof worked? Maybe it is a bit bright and blue compared to the rest of the image. Will have another play in photoshop in a bit and see if I can improve it a bit.

Thank you all once again for your comments, and I wish you all the best of luck with your 52's.

Like your first two images... not sure about your third... I get the style thing... but the PP is not for me... and I dont know... I just would not have shot a stile for "style"!... but that's just a personal thing... Its a good take I think!

I think you've done well with the image that you took. If nothing else, you've learnt how to treat an image like an old style van gough painting so... always positives. I prefer your first two images more though.

Fair do's Tina, it was always going to be marmite. I'm still 50/50 on the PP - some days I like, others I don't but I'll leave it as it is then maybe have another go at processing a little later in the year to see if I've improved.

Changed the title to reflect the fact this isn't a stile as well

Not sure if the pp works myself Caleb.. but I like your thinking (stile style) :D You came up with what you set out to achieve a painting style ;) Its a good pic be interesting to see what the original shot looks like without the heavy pp

Well after last weeks massive PP mistake, I decided this week would be a more conventional shot with minimal PP

Being a little bit of a rebel, and also to look for something unique I thought I'd pick something not to be opened;

Week 4 - Open by cw318is, on Flickr

Rad cap from my Impreza, Danger - Never Open When Hot! I picked it because I loved the cherry blossom cerise (look, its not pink okay) contrasting against the very black and currently very dirty engine bay. Sticking to my rules I used the nifty for this one and a slow exposure in the low light before dusk just to give it the grimy engine feel I wanted.

Did you use a tripod? I feel camera shake has made the cap soft... and not enough DOF so the whole cap from the jubilee type clip on the hose to the back cap is not in focus... I'd have liked it to be... Appart from that you are right to blur the back to get the grime feel...

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the crit, there is a very good reason why its not all in focus. I deliberately focused on the S of STI because the camera right half has a kindof film on it which is peeling away, you can see it around the "WHEN HOT" text. The first couple of shots were at f3.5 and everything was pinsharp - but it didn't look great because of the peeling plastic. I'll grab another shot tomorrow so you can see what I mean, but thats why a lot of it is deliberatly OOF.

Hiya Caleb,

What can I say, except anything to do with Subaru is great, I drive one too, a Forester turbo.

Have to agree with the colour being 'cherry blossom cerise ' a good description considering the origins of the Subaru.

I like your thought process for this theme, and going against the grain and thinking outside of the box.

Cheers

Dawn :)

Like the colour (whatever it is) it really stands out from the background, after reading above I understand your reasons for focusing where you have, but have to say that I believe more of the writing in focus (especially the words starting Subaru below it) would improve it.

Simon.
