Hi all.

I am a bit behind the times when it comes to drones so wondered if you lovely people on here have any experience with the DJI Mini 4 Pro?

I have never really needed one before, hence why my knowledge is pretty limited. However, I would like to see if I can get some Showjumping (horses) action with it (only when the horse doesn't mind it).

Ideally would like it to have really good video performance, and also be able to take some good snaps too.

Please share your experiences. I don't have a budget in mind so not restricted so to speak, but would love to hear thoughts on this drone from you guys.

Thanks in advance all.

There's a drone thread over in one of the other forum sections which may be useful to you:

I'm still using an older Mavic 2 Pro so I don't have any experience with the newer Mini drones.

I have the DJI mini 3 pro and it’s exceptional. Like you, wasn’t something I intended to get into but thought I’d give it a shot and was blown away by quality of video and photos. Spec wise the mini 3 pro felt like the first one with a genuinely decent camera and with added benefit it’s below the critical 250g mark - else you need to pass an exam (though I’d recommend completing the course anyway as it’s useful knowledge).

If you can find a 3 second hand with the fly more pack (extra batteries) and the standalone screen controller (vs controller you attach your phone to), do that. More bang for your buck and if you don’t like it, you should be able to resell for similar price.

Here’s some footage I shot with it (along with some snaps with my Sony A9):

Horses.... If they are yours, then perhaps you will be quite limited by wide angle lens. Air 3 and air 3s for example have a short telephoto option which would be much preferred.
If not yours .. then seriously forget it before you get police involved

Thanks John, I hadn't seen that, apologies, will take a look!

Thank you very much for that, that is great info and I will take a look at the video and have a read about the fly more pack!

Sorry I should have said - I am a local horse photographer and I cover shows and racing, so I have access to quite a few horses and yards, so hopefully no need for police to get involved!

I have a Mini 4 Pro. It's tiny and spectacular. It replaced my previous Air 2. I'm astounded by the capabilities of such a tiny device. The controller with the inbuilt screen also saves you from a lot of faffing with your phone so I recommend that too.

I got the Fly More package and the extra batteries are especially handy when I haven't flown it for a while. Like all DJI drone batteries, they self-discharge to 55% when not used for a while, so bear that in mind.

For stills, it is literally a tripod in the air. I've done 8 seconds exposures with it 100m high, pin sharp.

That sounds really good, thanks Andy.

Have you got any links to your pics of the 8 second exposures at all please?

I was out with my camera just practicing and got approached by someone with a drone and we had a chat, off the back of that I bought one (mini 4 pro) and I love it.

It will not compete with a professional camera (however it does compete quality wise with my gopro 10) and where I live at least I got some insurance and did my test (not mandatory but I did to keep things legal, insured and hopefully a bit safe).

Apart from worries of losing it from hard to retreive places, I've enjoyed it.

FWIW in my experience as a horsey person, the noise of a drone will spook at least some horses unless they are deliberately de-sensitised to it. Never mind if they actually see it moving around. I shouldn't want to be mid-canter approaching a jump when the horse catches a glimpse of a moving drone.
