Yes
So I have one for my tiny town , and I have just bailed on it, the abject racism , discrimination and just all sorts of nastiness in it just kind of horrified me.
Does anyone have one for there town which is going sour?

Before we moved, in Wellingborough - medium sized town in East Midlands - there were several local FB groups. I didn't engage in any of them but looked from time to time. The one I mostly looked at, seemed to be mainly local people looking for work or promoting their side-hustles (dog grooming, ironing, cleaning, handymen), and despite the very mixed demographics (English, East European, small south Asian population) there was very little racism and antagonism, although there was a significant and vocal pro-Brexit sentiment in general.

yeah now on mine its dog poo, shops popping up owned and run by eastern Europeans, the library being shut and the money going to house migrants,
recently its utter hatred to labour for cutting the fuel duty , the words being used to describe our MP are horrendous.

Most Facebook groups, are only as good as the group admins will allow. Racism etc is very quickly dealt with by our local administrators.

my local one only tends to be useful to find out what colour bins to put out
True, but it does get a bit annoying when the same question is asked half a dozen times in a day.

Just to let you know it's the green in this week. ( but in my area the green bin is general waste)

We have 3 or maybe 4. Due to the first one ,then another one with a similar name started then one called the official one it’s a total joke but no nastiness that I’ve ever seen .but that’s wales for you

We have one and it performs quite well, informing people about local crime, accidents, road closures, missing pets, parcels and packages which have been delivered to the wrong property etc. I think it is pretty good.

There is one for my city but I've never even considered joining it.

Grmph. I wrote a lively response about my local group, but then I added an emoji which broke my comment, and I’m getting server errors when trying to attach a screenshot of it.

In short: nice community, large Facebook group, a racist witch-hunty day (one of them, when pressed, said the men in question "looked like foreigners", so I joined in with the others wanting to know what foreigners look like), others absolutely horrified that a woman would dare to even consider talking to a young girl, and that the woman should have known that telepathically, abusive messages, admins removing posts then finally some of the ringleaders marching off in a hissy fit and created a new group, "[group name] with a voice".

Alas the new group only lasted a few days before it was banned - although in that time, there had been fights between the new admins about moderation, etc.

(Edit: but the rest of the time, it really is a very good, supportive and helpful group, if extremely boring at times.)

The group I am on is for a town in Denbighshire, and all towns in Denbs have groups with similar discussions. They have a new trollibloc system and even the council doesn't know which colour bin to put out, it's a bit of a local embarrassment, much like the deplored 20mph limit

They've cut the winter fuel allowance for pensioners.... but guaranteed to increase the fuel duty (something that is lower now than it was in 2010!!). But at least the doctors and train drivers are much well off...hooray!:headbang:

Ours is pretty informative, but don't call it a "village", the locals get upset, apparently it's a small market town (which doesn't have a market, just 4 shops, 3 pubs, a chippy, a chinese and a pizza take out). Oh, and don't mention dog poo, it upsets the natives.

I'm on several local FB groups, mainly for local info, events and stuff for sale.

I'm sure there must be a few idiots, as there are everywhere. I just don't allow them to ripple my psyche.

So all fine as far I'm concerned.

I don't do facebook but I do use Nextdoor and it's ok. I use it for tradesman recommendations mostly but for other stuff including crime awareness, general chat and jokes it seems ok.

Our village FB group is pretty good and usually helpful.

There’s a freebies group for our nearest town though which is full of knuckle draggers and chancers.

We have a whatsapp group for our estate, can get a bit heated sometimes. One evening they reported 2 men walking with a dog were taking interest in someones car, we realised it was us. My son had the same car, a resonably high spec BMW and he was having a look at this one.
Lots of comments like 'have you called the police yet' etc. I was tempted to let it play out and respond in the the morming that it was just us. But I thought it would be best to let them know rather than waste the police's time

Have you called the police !!!!

Dog poo, either uncollected or the poo bag left tied up
suspicious white van driving around
Who's letting of fireworks, my dog is going mental (my thought is your dog is protesting you not picking up its poo)
Moans about "speeding hooligans"
Accident on the main road, lots of sirens, hope everyone OK
What's that helicopter?

Do I win "Village facebook group" bingo?

I’m asking here its easier

I do have a Facebook account but solely because there are a few camera dealers who are present on FB but don’t have websites. I operate on the assumption that FB is a toxic swamp and give it a wide berth as much as possible.
It's a tool, it's what you make of it. I've got some friends on it, all of which are people I am friends with away from the Internet, and for me it's a good way of keeping up with people I rarely see.

You can certainly find patches of toxic swamp if you want to, or if you have friends that share stuff from the paper that supported Mosely and the British Union of Facists in the 1930s and similar material.

Yeah. I live in the south coast and it's not uncommon to hear helicopters looking for capsized boats of migrants in the channel. You can possibly imagine just how racist our local group gets.

The level of hatred and anger against labour MPs in them right now honestly makes me wonder if they are actually full of Tory ai bots.

We've got three main groups for each surrounding area and they can be quite invaluable.

The main posts are:
  • asking for tradesmen recommendations (very handy)
  • selling/swapping/giving away things (which I think is far better than throwing them away)
  • warning about car thefts, break-ins or people trying doors at night
I have noticed that in the wealthiest area they always sell items, whereas in the other two they tend give away or swap. There's never any racism, sexism or discrimination and generally people are all very nice and respectful. The worst you get (it's only really in one group) is the odd person complaining about someone's parking. They always do it anonymously though. Oh, you also get the odd alert about a road closure.

Are there any nicer groups in the area you could join?

The town one, Newark, is pretty dreadfull and populated by anonymous posters ranting at anything and everything. So i left that one, but the local area one for my estate and surrounding area is pretty good for tradesmen recommendations and lost parcels. You get the odd anon post from someone telling a neighour to shut their dog up but not much more entertainement than that.

My favourite passtime is blocking anyone in my local FB group who asks for reccomendations for home visits for nails, hairdressing, home tanning etc.

Also getting blocked is anyone who says "reccomend me a relaible honest cheap plumber/electrician/decorator/gardener/builder" etc etc. I have yet so see anyone ask for a an expensive unreliable uselss tradesperson, doesn't it go without saying???

Are you really not interested in personal recommendations for tradesmen?

They aren’t personal though, are they. They are posts on Facebook.

Made by persons that live in my village.

It's a lot easier and more efficient that putting a notice up in the post office.

That's my take anyway.

Getting more confused about Facebook. Do people actually bother to look at previous posts. We have had the circus in town and they are shining two "searchlights" up into the air at night so far this week all the local groups have had posts about strange lights, often several posts usually over an hour apart from each other.

Local event is going to haopen, organiser puts up details, then several posts about where and when is this event happening.

Where I am now, we have one group for each of the villages either side of our house (we are midway between them), and they are really useful for knowing about local events. No crazies and no tradesmen asks/offers, just social events.
