Yes
Just out of curiosity and mainly for those who cover race with refueling.

Do you have? Will you consider buy?

I know in some events you are required to wear them for photographing in the pit lane during race or qualifying.

No, don't have them, only have one event where they have ever demanded photographers wear them in the pitlane.

I'm sure you know which one that is!

I thought now they had stopped refueling they didn't want them anymore anyway....

I don't quite understand why DTM still required fireproofs last year without refueling, seeing those Germans hanging around with the fireproofs with 35+ degree outside made me feel sorry for them...I was wondering more about the endurance people, do you think it is something that a motorsport tog should generally have or not?

I thought last year that they didn't insist on them any more... I know some of the German regulars were still wearing them, but I didn't get kicked out the pitlane like we normally do for not having them...

It wasn't on the detailed H&S briefing we had from Brands with DTM (following complaints made by many about the non-transperency of the "rules" DTM were applying randomnly in previous years)

As far as I know it was ok not wearing them for FP1 and FP2 but for qualifying and race(possibly roll out and warm up too can't remember) it was compulsory if you wanted to have a walk in the pit lane

i've got flame retardent overalls for WEC and Blancpain, but thats different to fireproof.. mind you even fireproof overalls arent fireproof.

But they're better than nothing believe me, they do offer your skin protection. We have to wear FR overalls at work against electrical flash overs

well, interesting result so far, those who don't have are not thinking about buying, wondering why is that. Got a few possible answers in my mind...

The series followed doesn't require this kind of protection/don't have refueling?
Prefer to invest in camera gear?
Don't think I will need it?

I'd concentrate health and safety efforts on ankle protecting footwear and some sun protection.

Both of those are major hazards few address

Sorry if this seems obvious to everyone else, but what's the problem with ankles? I'm thinking along the lines of rabbit holes/uneven terrain?

Take a good hard look what's behind the arnco...its not exactly manicured lawn...

I lost count how many rabbit holes I fell in last year, thankfully I never done any damage. I just wondered if you were meaning frantic pit lanes/paddocks and front spoilers.

Lol nothing that obviously direct, just general outdoor hazards which are far more likely to hurt you than a giant fireball!

That is very true, and getting decent footwear is very sound advice.

Apparently you guys don't recognize the possibilities of fire within motor sports, and it is not just about refueling, a fire can happen any time, engine failure, after a crash, etc

if the majority of the photographers have common sense to keep a safe distance from the danger, other will do anything for a unique photo even if that mean putting themselves at risk

Oh its not impossible, I mean fire is why all those marshalls hang around with extinguishers and *occasionally* you see them actually use them on real flames.

It is however a question of risk vs probability that we all make.

If you were to look at the hazards which actually impact trackside photography based on frequency and therefore probability I'd say it probably ranks something like this:

1) Sunburn

2) Broken/twisted ankles

3) Gravel in the eye

4) Vehicle Debris hitting you

5) Tyrewall hitting you

6) Vehicle hitting you

7) Fireball hitting you

So, sun block, boots, ballistic glasses, helmet and body armour probably all should be purchased before flame proof overalls.

Unlike the marshalls, we aren't actually required to go leaping into burning cars...

Not directly relevant but related to desantnik's posts re sunblock.

Several years ago, I was a painter and decorator and worked outdoors on sunny days trying to get all the external painting done between showers. Being of Celtic extraction and therefore having fairly sun-sensitive skin, I got through a fair amount of factor 20 and so I claimed it vas a business expense to defray against tax liability. My claim for sunblock was rejected by the Infernal Revenue - at the time it was seen as a cosmetic! I hope things have changed now - sunblock isn't a fashion item, for some (if not all) of us, it's a necessity.

I'm sure its easy to work out, if its VAT zero rated then its H&S gear :)

Yes, but then I have been known to head in the direction of a burning car.

Garry I was responding (somewhat late) to the threads title. as per deasantiks response, I am sometimes one of those marshals "actually required to go leaping into burning cars"
(although I would never actually leap into a car on fire or otherwise)

You cleary do need protective gear then Munch :)

I hope you also then understand my heirachy of protection too :D
