Hello All

I'm a relative newcomer to both Bell Ringing in the UK and Photography, but i have a passion for both. I'm getting more and more involved in the promotion of Bell Ringing locally, which is a fantastic hobby that few people understand. (It's not Monk's flying up into the air like on the Mars Bar advert!!)

One thing i have noticed is that there is a shortage of excellent, inspirational photography of bell ringing and bell ringers.

So my challenge to the community here is to get some great shots of bell ringing and bell ringers. To explore the hidden parts of your local church or cathedral, to overcome all the problems of low light, fast movement, flighty subjects and hard to reach places. To open up a world of amazing communities, of people from every religion and no religion, of all ages and backgrounds. English church bell ringing is unique to the UK and few bells in the rest of the world are rung in the same way.

You'll find all bell ringers are a welcoming bunch and will support your access to the tower (and normally out of bounds places!) if you tell them why you want to come and take photographs - to promote bell ringing.

Most Towers have regular practice nights, where you can just pop along. (Just follow the sound of the bells!)

If you need help gaining access to somewhere or want a contact for your local church, let me know and i'll try to help.

Perhaps consider the brief to be to 'Challenge preconceptions about church bell ringing and bell ringers.'...

Ohh and don't forget throughout the history of bell ringing in the UK, bell ringers have rung rounds, then gone to the pub and bought rounds, so you may want to get involved there too!

Good luck to all!!

(PS. I'm not a marketing person or making any money at all here... I'm just an ordinary amateur photographer and bell ringer, that hopes to get the help of the amazing talent out there to produce some amazing images that i can share with credits on facebook / twitter etc to promote bell ringing and i'm more than happy to answer any questions. Thanks all!!)

An interesting challenge, I like it. But I do need a little help. Can anyone tell me the nearest tower to S4 8LE? I used to ring when I was in Bedfordshire and wouldn't mind tugging on a rope again.

To anyone else taking up this challenge I advise ear defenders if you are going to shoot in the bell chamber. Back in the medieval period they used to tie criminals into the ringing chamber for torture its that loud.

Hi Nick

Sorry for the glacial reply it took so long for someone to post - I kind of lost hope that anyone would take up the challenge!! Your nearest tower would be Sheffield Cathedral, but there are loads of local towers near you - see this map: http://dove.cccbr.org.uk/googleMap.php?lat=53.38312&lon=-1.46920

You can usually just wander along to their practice night - click on any of the towers in the link above to see what night they practice on... (7:30pm is the usual practice time.)

If you need any further help, let me know.

Matthew
