Honestly? I don't know either. I do know that a lot will chew the roots and kill (mostly) delicate or succulent plants.I don't know if all ants farm aphids
If you see ants climbing up any of your plants, there is a good chance there are Aphids.I'll take a closer look but to date I've not seen this.

If you look closely at the ants mouth you can just make out its "Milking" the Aphid.Excellent I haven’t seen it before either well spotted

Not all do Army Ants and Leaft cutters don't but in the UK a lot do. Some like Lasius Flavus though only farm underground aphids so photographing them would be very tricky.I don't know if all ants farm aphids. I'll take a closer look but to date I've not seen this.
