This was taken back in 2011 on our Farne's trip. There are many in the set that I feel the need to re-visit PP wise but for now here is my take on 'running the gauntlett' with the original pp ~ so more for sharing than critique.

On Inner Farne ~ It was quite the grab shot as the commotion caught my attention late in the 'attack' but this one got through with its beakfull of sandeels for the Puffling somewhere in its burrow.

The Black Headed Gulls really do gang up and mug the Puffins for their hard earned Sandeels.

They certainly have a hard life providing for their young ... miss the burrow and it's generally catch stolen!

I spent nearly my full time allocated on the farnes watching the one Puffin bringing food in ,consatntly being mobbed .
I eventualy got the shot of him being successful but the times he lost out was quite unbeleiveable ..

I also have one/some of the Puffins at the cliff edge with their beaks beaks full and cannot recall who told me but they are returnees that pause before making the last "rush" for the burrow. The BHG's only seem to attack them around the nesting burrows as they land to make that dash.

I surmise those that have the higher success return rate are the ones that can land almost at the burrow entrance........ because once emerged it is, to the Gulls, like they don't exist.

These make for some nice portrait shots, I also heard that some in fact don't have nests at all but are just 'parading' ... no idea about the fact of that but the ones I saw stayed a very long time without going anywhere.

It must be hard watching this, cool frame Laurence, great read too cheers for posting,i've learnt a bit from this especially the above^^^
I'd love to see more
