Saw this gorgeous looking fly at RSPB Leighton Moss today. No idea what it is. Any ideas?

Looks like a Ruby-tailed wasp.

Yeah looks like a Ruby tail wasp... I believe these wasps generally don't sting unlike many others that are d**ks

Never seen one before. Didn't know we had other species of wasp in the UK, especially one that's so colourful.

think they are rare-ish, I have got the odd photo of them but they are on smaller side so end up being a massive crop

Thousands of wasp species and only a few are social wasps.
I am guessing this was trapped and exhausted as they are usually seriously difficult to photograph.
A Chrysididae sp. Probably Chrysis sp.
