weekly GarethB's 52 challenge for 2019 - Week 51 & 52 - CHRISTMASSY & OUTTAKES - FINISHED!

Marbles for me. I like all the different colours.
Must have been quite an effort getting them to stay lined up like that.

Many thanks Tim!
It was a happy accident with the colours!
The marbles were just green and blue coloured, but I used an orange backdrop, which caused those little orange segments in the glass.
And keep it to yourself, but I used tiny blobs of white 'BlueTac' to hold the marbles in position!:giggle:
If you look closely, you can just see the edge of some under one of the marbles.
I tried to clone it out, but couldn't in the end....hardly visible though.

This image (marbles) fascinates me on so many levels, my favourite so far this week.

Thank you so much @gremlin16 very kind of you to say, most appreciated!

Nice colours in the marbles, nicely lined up. Seems just slightly out of focus. Don't think I have ever photographed marbles, I shall have to give it a try.
The peg I really like too, a nice and simple composition with a great reflection.

Many thanks for commenting Michael.
Not sure what is out of focus though....I chose the third marble from the right as the point of focus, and although I was at f2.8 I thought it looked quite sharp.
I'll go back and have another look though....I am indeed very overdue for an eye test....my reading glasses may be failing me and I can't get my arms to grow any longer!!:giggle:

Excellent idea, love the BG colour, I think the focus is fine but then I have to wear reading glasses too

Love the marbles and the depth of field. Did you try it with a background colour that picked up one of the colours in the marbles? Just wondered if that would add or detract from the image!

Nice images Gareth. Good use of shallow DoF on the marbles, and the colours are quite punchy.

The only thing I might have done differently would have been to fill the frame entirely of marbles!

Many thanks Allan, appreciate the kind comments!(y)
It's a pain in the proverbials with all these specs all over the place....I've got lookers, readers, see-ers, do-ers and drivers!!
I've been wearing my normal short sighted specs for years, but now I'm having to have two pairs on my face!!
There's no excuse....I'm gonna have to go bifocal!!

Two great images for object Gareth, liking both very much as I loved playing marbles as a little boy I pick that shot. The peg is beautifully taken and a great reflection also plus good and sharp with great lighting.

Thank you most kindly Dave, much appreciated!(y)
I used to have fun with marbles too as a youngster....brought back some memories.
I lost all mine over the years sadly (pun intended! )....those in the photo were actually out of a Christmas cracker....not a bad little prize really.

Two stunning shots. You didn't lose your marbles and you nailed, or pegged, the second shot.

Thank you Bob, for looking and for your positive comments.(y)
Glad you picked up on my little marble joke;)....and I didn't think of a peg joke, so thanks again!!

Thank you kindly Joan for the positive comments.(y)
Yes I did place a coloured background....an orange sheet of card, well spotted!
I had originally just wanted to have a warm glowy reflection of the orange on the black tile where the marbles were placed, but it had the added effect of those little orange segments showing in each marble....wish I could say that I had planned it like this, but it was purely a happy accident!
The marbles themselves were coloured with just blue and green, and I think the little splashes of orange go quite nicely.

I like both, marbles is perhaps my favourite. Great images Gareth!

Thank you Dom, for looking and for your positive comments, most appreciated!(y)

You make a good point regarding filling the frame, I was intending to arrange them in different patterns, and perhaps shoot some more closeups.
I only had six marbles however, but when I saw the image, I was quite pleased with how it turned out....so I thought "If it ain't broke...don't fix it!"

Nice shots Gareth, think I prefer the peg purely for the textures on the wood, very sharp! Nice one!

Thanks Daniel, appreciate the positive comment....glad the peg is getting some love!:D

Object
Really like the marbles, a good reflection and love the colour of the background (base).

Both great object images. I like them both and i'm torn. I love the colours of the marbles and the focal point but I also love the peg for it's simplicity

Two super images, Gareth. The focus, colours and details in the marbles are fascinating and it's interesting that you have caught the colours of the background in the marbles. The peg is simple but also a cracker; pin sharp, well lit and great reflection (y)

Thank you most kindly Andrea (y) , indeed I became all excited when I saw how the background was reflected in the marbles.
In fact looking at it again, I have only just noticed that the orange 'segments' are actually the partially obscured background, with the big circular diffuser I was using creating the 'segment' effects.

Two very nice images there Gareth. The marbles win for me. That is a really good creative shot that works very well. The peg shot is good too for it's simplicity. I'd be interested to see a shot with all of the peg in focus.

Since you asked so nicely....;)

I did a quick re-shoot, and focus stack, since I hadn't dismantled the setup....it's not perfect, but it's all in focus....kinda!!:giggle:

Week 9 - Wet.

(Click here to go back to the contents page)

Here is my entry for the theme 'wet'.
I seem to be relying on my shiny black tile for an awful lot of themes lately.
I promise to be more adventurous and maybe even go outside one day!:giggle:

This is a focus stack of 11 images, with various coloured backdrops behind to give a rainbow effect.

These next two were attempts to get a flower inside a drop....it wasn't particularly successful!:(

In this next image, you can clearly see the 'helping hands' device inside one of the the drops, which I used to hold the flower and leaf....oops!:sorry:

As always, thanks for looking folks!
:)

The first on for me very psychedelic the focus stacking has worked a treat, great idea for the theme.

Great images for wet Gareth, love the colours!!

Object: Both are very nice images for the theme. Can’t beat a good marble picture though. plenty of colour and details. Learnt something new about the humble peg though. Never heard them referrred to as C 47’s before though.

Wet: Has to be the first image, some lovely colours there. Never tried stacking better put that on my list to try. Love the abstractness of the image.

Rough-great take on the theme, I really like the composition
Object-The peg is a good shot, butI love the marbles, the colour is great
Wet-I like all of them, but the psychedelic first one is the pick if the bunch. Again, beautiful colours.

Gareth, bit of a catch up
Object, nice and suits the theme. The background just works against the colours
Wet, the whole concept is fab. The background and colours superb. Just makes we look and envy !

Cracking 1st shot. Really like the amount of water drops and the different colours you have got there.

Many thanks Allan, appreciate the positive comments. Indeed the focus stack worked out quite well....this was the second attempt, and I didn't need to tweak it manually....which was a huge relief!!

Great images for wet Gareth, love the colours!!

Thank you Daniel, for looking and commenting.(y)

Very good images throughout. A lot of work on the first, but it paid off for sure.

Thank you kindly Bob! The 'flower inside a drop' images took ages to set up too....and were ultimately disappointing sadly....just couldn't seem to get the angles right.
I have been well and truly humbled and am in awe of those that create such images! I'll keep practising though!

The 1st psychedelic shot for me Gareth, the colours and lighting are bang on and yes it is like a rainbow. Another great job done from you.

Thank you so much Dave!
I only had five coloured sheets for the background....luckily they were all strong colours that covered the main rainbow colours.
I have since bought a few more (today in fact) to fill in the gaps....you can never have too many backgrounds!!:giggle:

I believe the C-47 nomenclature is derived from the movie industry after World War II.
As I understand, it came from the name of the particularly versatile Douglas C-47 aeroplane, which was also known as the Douglas DC-3 in civilian use.
The name was appropriated for the clothes peg in the film industry in Hollywood, due to it's versatility, since lighting personnel would use it for clipping cables, barn-doors or gels to hot lights. They didn't burn easily or melt so they proved very useful....just like it's namesake, the C-47 aircraft.
It's perhaps an antiquated term these days, and maybe it's only used by American photographers, but I think it's a pretty cool moniker!:giggle:

Gosh, thank you so much Chris, exceedingly kind of you to say!:)

A real wow shot for Wet there Gareth. A well thought out shot. Really like the colour stripes on the tile that are echoed in the water droplets.

Thank you very much Lee, very kind comments.
I should say that it was your beautiful water drop shot that inspired the rainbow colours!
I tried to achieve it by bouncing light at different angles, but I ended up digging out my coloured cards....worked a treat, so thanks again Lee!(y)

#1 is a clever take on the theme and very abstract too.

Thank you kindly Stan, I really appreciate your positive comments!(y)

Cracking 1st shot. Really like the amount of water drops and the different colours you have got there.

Many thanks @Chenti for looking and commenting, most appreciated!(y)

Nice colours, very psychedelic! Interesting to see a different take on the water drops! #3 is very good also! I didn't notice the helping hands, I thought they were stems from other flowers! Nice work Gareth!

Hi Gareth, two super shots for wet, well done with the focus stacking, an excellent image, very colourful, I thought it might be oil on water which gives a similar effect.

I did some flower reflections for the 2015 52’s, it’s not easy is it and takes a lot of patience, it is very satisfying though when you finally capture one, my record was seven in one pic. I cheated and used a green drinking straw, I found the water drops stayed on their longer :) The second one is lovely, you’ve really captured the shape of the flower, well done.

Wet
A good looking shot, I like the colours and the fact that the drops of water aren't round, but are irregular shapes.

Wet, first shot for me, thought they are all great. ell done :)

What a very clever image that is Gareth. The fact that you've been so creative in changing the backdrops. I can't stop looking at it

All three are great shots, but the one you chose is the best.

Thank you kindly Ian, for looking and commenting.(y)

Indeed it is difficult....it was my first attempt at a flower reflection in a water drop....and while it didn't go exactly to plan, I feel encouraged to keep trying.
I was inspired by a Canadian macro specialist....Don Komarechka - his images are stunning!
His site is HERE....definitely worth a look.

Thank you very much Ian, very kind of you to say(y)....send me the opticians bill if your eyesight goes all wibbly from looking at it too long!!
