I'm after some advice, I'm off to Goodwood FOS for my first time & these days I prefer to travel light, so it it worth me taking my Canon 100-400 lens? I don't have a seat in the stands so we will be just walking around so will it be of use or just another weight to carry.

Any advice would be welcome

Thanks Doug

It's a few years since I went (also just walking around) but I did use a longer lens for a number of shots - it allows you to take advantage of some less crowded spots, as those closest to the track are often the busiest.
If you don't take the 100-400, what would be the longest lens you'd have?
(EG If you would have a 70-300 anyway, that's quite different to having a 24-70 as your longest lens)

I have the 18-135 kit lens and 70-200 f4l but my son might be using it. I think I will take the 100-400 with me. I would not like to miss any shots by not having it with me. Thanks for your advice

Have a great time, and allow plenty of time to get there - the roads around Goodwood get very busy whenever there's something on.

I am a FoS regular and always take my 100-400.

Bourn of many years experience, I believe one of the secrets to enjoying a day at the FoS is to get there early - properly early! I try to be parked no later than 6:45am. This way, you should avoid the traffic (and enjoy a great drive in if you choose your route carefully - I prefer the Billinghurst - Petworth - Duncton route, much nicer roads than the A24/A27 route satnav's tend to favour) will be parked nearer the access gates, and will get an hour or two of relative peace and sanity wandering around the paddocks.

Have been to Goodwood a few times now (lost count actually) and have settled on one body (Full frame) with a 35 for the paddock and 100-400 for action on the hill/rally stage and close ups of celebrities etc

GET THERE EARLY is the best advice as said above, seriously early :)

Have a great time

Thanks, I was planning on leaving early and now the m25 is shut at junction 10. So a detour as well. Might be along day!

The row of tractors in the grass parking areas are not for show!

If the rain keeps up between now and the weekend then parking will be a swamp. Play it safe and park in the multi storey next to the train station and catch the very regular FOS shuttle bus from the station entrance. They are fast tracked into Goodwood.

Friday in particular is looking challenging.....I'd suggest leaving anything low-slung at home. Sadly, my NSX will not be venturing into the fields (and most certainly not multi-storey car parks!!!) this weekend.

Expect to walk a lot. And there to be a lot of people. I'm not even sure if I am going to bother taking my camera.

I will be going on Saturday and hoping not to get my MR2 Roadster stuck in a muddy field...

Thanks for all the advice. I'm expecting a busy, tiring, traffic jam filled day, with loads of walking and to be towed out of the car park then! Still I'm sure we will enjoy it. Thanks again & hopefully look out on here for a few snaps that I may be able to get between the crowd.

Definitely leave your sportscars at home

Taken today before any public use of the car parks.

Ground is holding up (and improving) nicely today.

Forecast for tomorrow (Friday) is much better than it was a couple of days ago. Hopefully the overnight rain doesn't come to much.

Last time I went (several years back) it was the opposite problem - middle of a heat-wave, so everyone spent a small fortune on bottled water (or other beverages...), and the amount of dust in the air made changing lenses a risky business.

Well I thought I'd give an update on my day at the FOS. Travel was very good , no problems at all and we were in by 9am. Nice and sunny morning , loads of walking and I still ache now. We spotted plenty of famous people, and then got absolutely soaked at the end of the day. Slipped over in the mud coming down the hill from the rally course. My rucksack had just about dried out. I took but didn't use my 100-400! . To sum up, tired, sore feet, got soaked, covered in mud, but had great day. Would I do it again, hell yes.

Pretty much my experience, but with less falling over. I didn't think that it was as good for photography as in previous years though. They have stacked more straw bales, combined with the crowds it was difficult to see the cars, let alone photograph them.

Fortunately the rally stage was much better.

The view from the ground isn't that great. I might consider a stand ticket for my next visit.

We got to the rally stage late and only managed to see a few cars go through In the rain. It was walking back down the hill when I slipped over.
