Hi,

I recently did some filming and I noticed my mic (smallrig mic on the hotshoe > using a ronin s gimbal) picking up the lens (Canon 16-35 v1) focusing. I don't remember/ noticed it doing this during my last filming (will get my lens sent out on Monday to get checked).

Anyone have any tips/ tricks (in Davinci/ iMovie) to maybe minimise the issue. I know I won't be able to fully fix this (that's why I'm currently look for a wireless dji mic).

no way to fix in post?
in theory maybe, but you may have to spend £££ for a half decent solution. Da vinci studio has voice isolation feature. I have no idea if it works well enough.

Maybe there are similar audio specific AI apps. Again expect this to be priced as a premium feature.

If you do find otherwise please let us know.

Best solution is to keep mic well away from your camera. Some lenses are quiter than others, but none are perfect.

I had one clip where external mic wasn't plugged in, so that was just horrible. We just shot another take...

I've never had to use it but as mentioned above, Da Vinci Resolve has voice isolation which should cut out the lens focusing noise. I also believe some of that functionality might be available in the free version but have a dig around YouTube and see what you find.

I guess that Canon 16-35 was made way before video functionality was a priority for manufacturers so they didn't really think that focus mechanism noise was something to think about.

These days the more video-centric brands have lenses that are truly dual purpose, having inaudible focusing and are even corrected for focus breathing.

Yeah I had the same problem where the mic was fully plugged in but there was no sound. Found out that the cable needs to be slightly out and I just watch out for the sound icon on the camera.

I paid for 'podcastle' but the ai denoise function wasn't that great :(

I've downloaded 'audacity' and theres a function where I can silence a certain part of the sound. It noise comes and goes quite quick but sometimes it clashes when someone speaks - so this function work there.

Its weird cause I used the same setup - even using the camera mic before and it didn't pick up the lens focusing.

I'm still using a 1DX II for stills and just getting into filming with it. Maybe in a year or two I will get something thats more film focused.

So with the voice isolation - will it seamlessly blend it or is there a hard cut from where I isolate the lens sound? I'll have a look into this.

At this point I don't even mind fading in/ out the lens noise (haven't found a way in davinci to select a section of the sound+fade in/ out) - as its not always doing it and quick (less that a second or two).

Firstly I don't know.

Secondly entry level lapel mics are just 20-30 and they are a massive upgrade over internal sound already

If you did not have an issue before, get the lens serviced, it may be a binding stepper motor..... Best solution, move audio off camera.
