Certainly is a hummingbird hawk moth. Well done for catching it. I've had one on my phlox a couple of times but not when I've been near a camera.

Thank you very much everyone. I'd never seen one before and they don't hang around long by each flower. I realised half way through my shutter speed was way too slow... I was also using AF on my Macro lens which is ok but not the fastest, might try another lens and see how that works, or try MF but not sure if will work as they are so jumpy.

Will try the same place again (a massive lavender plant) and hopefully it will be back.

Well done for catching it! I saw one in my garden a few weeks ago, but by the time I'd found my camera it had gone! Must remember to keep the camera ready to be snatched up and used!

Thanks everyone = they are tricky! Went back for another attempt. Fair to say it was hardgoing and I now have a great collection of lavender shots and out of focus flying insects.
