Ilfotec HD Dilutions

Hi all

I have acquired a bottle of Ilfotec HD. It is still sealed and well within date but I've never used it before and I'm wondering how essential it is to dilute a stock solution as Ilford recommend.. I realise this would be easier to mix but it would give me 4L of stock which I'd need to use in 6 months. This is way more than I need. I'm considering using a syringe and diluting as needed from the concentrate. What say you to this notion? If this worked, I could get 480ml of working solution from 15ml of concentrate with 465ml water at a 1+31 dilution.

Obviously I would use a syringe to do this. Surely this would be all fine and dandy? My remaining question therefore is what happens to the remaining concentrate as it gets gradually used up? I believe this would normally last indefinitely in its original unopened container but how about once air is present? I am sure I read somewhere that the concentrate is impervious to air due to it's inherent structure and properties. Is this right and if so, I assume there would be no problem with my plan.

If not I suppose I could transfer to smaller concertina bottles as time goes by but this is obviously a less attractive proposition for a number of reasons. Advice welcome

Is it a plastic container? I read somewhere that over time plastic containers leak gases and so using a glass container is the best bet for long term storage. I will search up that post once I get done with meetings.

Can't find a reference to IlfoTec HD...

If you mean Ilfotec HC, that's functionally the same as Kodak HC-110 I believe. The latter also suggests making up a stock solution and then diluting that; however I (and many others AFAICS) just use a syringe for my 6.2 ml to make 200 ml for my Rondinax. Just make sure it's well mixed; I pour from measuring jug to temporary container back and forth a few times, with added swirliness.

If you mean IlfoTec DD. thats a replenishing developer for labs AFAIK. DDX is for us kids, but I've never used it.

Hah. My mistake. I did indeed mean Ilfotec HC. Thank you for the information. That's good to know and should make things a lot easier. I'm not sure how precise these things need to be but I will try and be as accurate as I can.

I have a 10 ml syringe; the end of the plunger is kind of curved, but you can get pretty close to 6.2 ml. Of course, for folk with proper sized tanks for 2 or more films, you'd have quite a bit more syrup , so easier to measure. However, I most strongly doubt whether it matters a hoot whether I have 6 ml vs 6.5 ml for dilution B (1+31). I do use dilution E (1+47) quite a bit for faster films; for 200 ml that would be 4.2 ml of syrup, so because of the "rule" that you should always use at least 6 ml per film, I make up 300 ml of solution and overfill my tank. But I've wandered way off topic here, sorry!

By no means, Chris. I find it interesting to learn how people process their films. Thank you for all the information. I have a larger syringe which comfortably measured s 15ml so that works for me because I need 500ml for my tank
