I've been trying for years to get a good, clear, unobstructed shot of this butterfly, and I finally succeeded yesterday evening! It's made difficult by the fact they rarely seem to settle for long, and if they do it's low down in the vegetation. Added to this, their preferred habitat is peat bog, so it can be hazardous to chase them willy-nilly. However, I noticed one individual settling relatively high up, and the dry weather recently made the bog a bit safer to walk on. After about 10 minutes of following it, I finally got close enough for this shot:

Taken at Fen Bog NR in N. Yorkshire (a hot-spot for this species), using the Canon 5DMkIV + Canon 180mm f3.5L Macro lens.

Cheers,

What a lovely image. The colours are very harmonious. Kudos for perseverance too, you must be rightly pleased!

Thanks! I was extremely pleased to finally get this shot! Large Heath won't win any prizes for most colourful butterfly, but I think it has a subtle, understated beauty which fits in with its environment.
