I have just got a Lastolite High Key backdrop and am a little lost as to how to set up my lights . I have a 3 light Interfit 300 watt flash kit and a Speedlite 580 with canon 30D camera. I think I should use a fill light behind the camera. A key light at 45 degrees and a light inside the backdrop. Is this right and how should I set the lights to get a good high key photo. Hoping to take some of the grandchildren this weekend.

Well you don't need to use the Speedlite unless you're simply using it to set off the interfit lights themselves. Use a white backdrop and as you say a light at the base of this.
Put the main softbox above and 45 deg to the right front of the subject. Put the other box/ brolly on the other side further away but pretty similar angle. Although children can be a pain to get to stand in one place. Set the lights up as above and put a put of parcel tape on the ground where the lights intersect and tell the kids to run around but don't cross the line. Worked for me. Good luck ! :)

Hi Phil,
Ive only used my Hilite once, and it was in rather rushed circumstances, so I dont remember the settings I used on the two lights which were Bowens Esprit 500's.

I put one light camera right (furniture dictated this) at subject head height into the Hilite and zipped closed around it.
The other light (with softbox) I also had camera right' 45 degrees to subject, about 3ft away ... again dictated by being unable to move the furniture in a 10'x10' room.

My subject was very close to the Hilite... and I tried a variety of settings, the lighting on the backdrop came out even in all shots.
Hth a bit ... Im yet to experiment properly with the bg, so Ill be interested to hear how your shoot goes.

.

By the way where did you get your lights from and do you think they are worth it. I am thinking of getting some.[/QUOTE]

I like the lights which I bougut from Warehouse Express I fire them using a wireless trigger on the hotshoe or with the Speedlite. They are supplied with cables for PC slot.Kit comes with 2 softboxes, unbrella, barn doors and a snoot. They are fully adjustable for power

Thanks very much for the link it will be very usefull when I have had a little time to take it all in.

Hope to get some good shots this weekend but I will post next week for c&c wheather good or not as all help is gratefully recieved.

Thanks to all

Phil.
