Light stands - advice please

I'm looking to get a light stand just for mounting a flash on (I already have a bracket). I'd like something that folds up fairly small and will extend to at least 6ft. I've seen this one on ebay, for those of you that know more about this sort of thing than I do, does it look any good?

Could anyone recommend an alternative? I'm looking for something preferably costing around £30 or less.

Interesting design - looks like the feet fold down and swivel out - nice & portable

Light stands need big feet and to weigh a lot if you are shooting with minors around who may run into them, or want to use heavy flash and/or boom arms

Always a good idea to put your camera bag on the feet if poss to add extra weight to lighter ones; but if you're only after something for a camera flash, or small studio unit this should do the job fine IMO

Just bear in mind it looks like to get it to over 6ft you use the feet like tripod legs, this will be much less stable so more care will be needed. If you buy it, post your thoughts for others' interest later - cheers

I had the same problem and now use a cheap Vebron (spelling?) tripod with adapter for mounting flash. There are loads of alternatives in the states but here you either find a light stand like you have pointed out (which looks pretty portable by light stand standards) or use a cheap and cheerful tripod. Portability is paramount for me here otherwise I'm less likely to actually use the thing. I currently do very little flash photography but would like to start doing a bit more to expand my skills.

From what you've said I may well go for that stand, it does look good for the price and fits my requirements. Quality looks good too, although that is hard to judge just from pictures and I'm always wary of stuff from HK/China.

I do currently use an old velbon tripod but I can't mount my umbrella to it and I can't get the height I'd like so I've decided a light stand is the way to go. Also a lot more portable than a tripod.

I recently got myself a Giottos P-Pod from ebay its a little dearer than you £30 but is ideal for a off camera flash and makes a semi-reasonable tripod (i wouldn't trust it too much) and also a really good monopod. Its very portable and ideal for 'quick' use

Go to tecno.co.uk and get a portaflash stand. I use mine for exactly the purpose you want to and have no problems with them at all and they're loads cheaper than Jessops. Think I paid £10 a stand.

Well, I bought the one off ebay, will let you know what I make of it when it arrives.

That P-Pod does look like a really great design, I'm very tempted to get one of them at some point, would be great to take travelling.

I also had a look at the £10 stands but opted against them as they don't pack down that small and I really wanted something that would be very easily transportable.

Cheers for everyones' help.

They're not very compact but in true pauper style I skipped the expensive photography marketed kit bags and bought a slazenger hockey bag from sports world for a measly £9. It fits 2 stands, 1 tripod, 4 umbrellas, mounts, flashes, radio triggers and more with room to spare. Weighs a bit when fully packed but it keeps everything tidy and manageable for £9 so I ain't complaining;)
