Hi all

While a member for a while, I have not done very much photography at all. I read up how to do motion blur this morning and had a go. Not brilliantly sucesful but a start and I'm happy to start learning a new techniquw (not very good post processing yet either). Tips welcome!

It's difficult to make an effective panning shot with a wide angle lens. You need to be closer to the subject than this, with a lower shutter speed, and tracking their movement through the viewfinder to keep them in the same place. An example:

With your shot you would have benefitted using a longer focal length to make the subject larger in the frame, pivoting your body to follow as it passed you and using the in body stabilisation to manage camera shake. Also be careful not to over-expose the scene as you have here a little, and if necessary use a neutral density filter.

Well done for trying. (y)

That’s all great advice from @ancient_mariner, all I can really add is practise makes perfect. I did a day at Brands Hatch a couple of years ago (CameraWorld Live, and I’m going again this year) and by the end of the day I could see a definite improvement in my shots.

I actually really like the shot you’ve posted - it may not be technically perfect, but there’s a great sense of motion in it (y)
