Newbie Lens Advice Please

I would like to do some Macro Photography. Shots of spiders, insects etc. I have a Canon 24-105 L Series Lens & 7D II which I have tried with extension tubes but I'm not happy with the performance/results. The fittings seem loose and the auto focus isn't performing well.
I would really appreciate some advice on Lens choice please. Initially keeping cost down I will probably be looking at second hand, either Sigma or Canon.
Your opinions and advice would be very much appreciated, thank you.

The AF on most lenses is not great when you get into macro and some will not AF
What brand of extension tubes have you got and are they metal or plastic?
