Nickbee's 2024 52 - Week 36: Tools (including catchup)

Excellent. Works brilliantly for an accidental. They are often the best of a shoot!

The fuel gauge is very good. As I see it, you have the "whole tank full" idea but also an idea of speed with the blur. So it kinda works that way, albeit inadvertently.

I once took some night shots of a village and a full moon. Wasn't happy so started playing around with bulb. In one I just moved the camera up and down and created a kind of abstract. I named it "Puigcerda and the Moon" but initially thought "Jackson Pollock Move Over" would be cool!!

I really like that fuel shot! Sometimes the surprise effects just work :)

Liking the fuel gauge shot

Indeed it's both the best and worst photo, I really liked it

Thanks all, I appreciate the kind comments!

Week 9 - Hidden

Week 9- Hidden by nickbrotherston, on Flickr

I somehow forgot to take a picture and only realised when I came to post week 10's, I was really devoid of inspiration for this one but remembered seeing something like this appear randomly on my Facebook feed. I'm interested in opinions on the desaturated look. if anyone has one!

Week 10 - Texture

Week 10 - Texture by nickbrotherston, on Flickr

I really wanted to bring out the detail in whatever texture I selected. I placed the shoe in direct sunlight for some contrast and used a short macro tube with a 85mm 1.8 to get in nice and close. I don't think you'd look at this shot and say "oh look at the texture" but the texture of the laces and leather are certainly visible and I like the final result too much not to go with it. I did consider bringing out the red a bit to tick the technique box but it looked distracting and I didn't want to spoil it.

I am aware that this is the second photo this year feature shoes, and strenuously deny any weird interest in footwear.

Hidden - I don't get it!

Texture - fab take on the theme :)

Week 11 - (Something) Personal

11 - Personal by nickbrotherston, on Flickr

Our wedding rings are engraved around the inside in our own handwriting. My original thought for "personal" had obviously been to submit a willy shot, but whilst I had the macro out I tried this as well. I struggled to have enough light to make it interesting without generating too many distracting reflections.

I like the composition, blur and sharpness in the right place. Nicely done!!
Thanks Bob, it took a few goes to get the focus right.

I like this - light playing on a light... very good

Thank you, I thought it was interesting to have the bulb casting a shadow and making things darker rather then light.

Really like this. Just wondering how it would look the other way round - bulb in focus snd shadow blurred??

The emphasis was deliberately placed on the shadow to fit the theme. which also handily renders invisible all the dirt accumulated inside the bulb.

This works very well.

Thanks Kell!

Week 13: Unkempt

Week 13: Unkempt by nickbrotherston, on Flickr

Taken on the same lane as the shot from week 1. There are a couple of really nice houses down there but also one large plot of land which is completely overgrown and surrounded by a hotchpotch of makeshift fences. The multitude of "no fly tipping" and CCTV signs make me laugh every time.

Really liking the shadows and silhouettes pic, love the light lines through the shadow of the bulb.
Unkempt certainly fits the bill too.

Yes that's definitely unkempt, processing suits the picture and probably the feelings of the people who live nearby

Week 14 - Gob Shot

Week 14 - Gobshot by nickbrotherston, on Flickr

I had the idea to play on the joke about women not being able to put on mascara with their mouth shut. I didn't love the outcome: my model frankly did a terrible job of acting natural and a worse job of staying in focus. Nevertheless, in before midnight.

Nicely shot gob :)

Works well for the theme, brave man asking for a volunteer then a bit of criticism, assume your volunteer does read posts on TP :)

Unkempt: That more than fits the bill and works really well in mono. It would probably be a bit too messy in colour
Gob shot: Perfect... I really don't know why you can't do it with your mouth shut but it is so true!

Interesting take on the theme!! Good job!!

Thank you, was trying to be imaginative.

Nicely shot gob :)

Much obliged.

Ah well, in honesty the focus was mu fault! As for acting naturally, she struggled but she hates posing and managed to do a good job so I was very grateful. And no, she doesn't read this.

Yes, and the bright blue sky didn't suit the rubbish dump mood either. As for the mouth I am assured that it can be done with it closed and that special effort went into keeping it open!

Week 15 - Snapper's Choice (plus vivid technique)

Week 15: Snapper's Choice by nickbrotherston, on Flickr

I probably could have ticked the vivid box before, but saved it for Snapper's Choice so I could shoot what's almost certainly the most vivid thing I own. I spent a while driving about trying to find a location today, with the sun high in a very blue sky, and the cherry blossom* couldn't have been a more appropriate backdrop. I bumped the pink levels up a bit to bring that out, and the blue in the sky too.

This is the third crop I've posted - first the full 2:3 which was too tall, then a square which cut off too much sky. Fortunately only @-Oy- and @Boots were quick enough to notice.

*I'm not Alan Titchmarsh so this might not be cherry blossom, but it's pink blossom, so close enough.

I too like a square. But in this case that extra blue sky works well :)

I like the square crop, and I think the vivid treatment works well.

Thanks both for you input. I'm so undecided on this one! I've re-posted it at 3:4 which is a bit of a compromise.

Nailed it :)
