I went to the annual bonfire night event at ottery st marys last night where tar barrels are lit and people run through the street with them, was fun apart from the burn marks in my waterproof :bang:

these were all shot between 17mm and 20mm on a crop body to give you some idea of how close you get to the fire

Suprised the council lets that happen. Very interesting photos ***

 have 'elf and safety not reached there yet ?

when you look at somethings that are blocked/prevented and then things like that pass without issue it does make you wonder who decides these things.

Great photo's of the event btw (y)

It happens every year brings in a lot of folk also I think kids have one ealry on in the day also the pubs go on till about 3am
Crazy! Its funny how places wont let you do simple things because of 'health and safety' i.e ive heard of local councils being funny about tripods in public places yet if it brings in a revenue then its fine to run down the street with a bucket of fire

I think it was very well caught and really interesting to see some of the traditions we still keep to in this country. I thought chasing cheese was the daftest thing people in this country do.....I stand corrected

nice pics

There's huge disclaimer signs all over the site. Anything happens, you're essentially on your own.
That said, you've not lived on the edge until you've been party to a Ottery tar barrel scrum.

Fantastic shots.

Looks like thirsty work and great to see that some traditions can carry on regardless.

No 1 is my brother in law! :D
My 2nd brother in law is a roller too as was my wifes dad.

you must have been stood close to us to take that?
He brought the barrel over to the kids had a good spin and threw the tar all over the floor :p.

the tar incident!

My brother in law with my girls and nephew!

dont know who this was just nice and close.

Two of my nephews are barrel rollers and next year all three of them will be doing the kids barrels. (eldest nephew above)

i would be happy to sort out a higher resolution pictures for him if he would like one. i probabilly have a few others of him too

Great photo's....great tradition......but I still think they are all crazy

I've been to the Ottery St Mary event many years ago and it's quite a scary, almost Pagan event. I'm surprised our modern Health & Safety ethic let it still happen- but long may it continue!

This is O St M who also have a night where the cubs and scouts (dress up as Pixies)
The re-enactment of the Pixie Revenge takes place at 18:15 in Broad St, Ottery St Mary. The Pixie hoards assemble making a frightening and unholy racket and are then addressed by the Chief Pixie who whips them into a frenzy. They then set off towards the Church with the intention of doing great harm to the Bell ringers. In short order the ringers are captured and paraded though the streets before re-enacting their final escape from the Pixies. Finally humiliated the Pixies flee the town.

I think that first one is a great capture.

Isn't it warming to know that there's one little pocket of civilisation in this country that hasn't been ruined by Nu Labour.

But I'm ashamed to say that I, as a south west Somerset lad, didn't know about the goings on down the road at Ottery.

Nice shots - fair play for capturing something different to the usual fireworks.. I love the looks of terror and toil on most of the faces in the images :D

Absolutely - I cling to little things like this in an effort to retain some sense of pride in this burnt out nanny state shell of a country..

That would be brilliant thanks.

Holy carp!!!

Great shots of a pretty unique event (I would imagine!) (y)

Fabulous set there Alastair (y)

Two stand out for me; #4 for the detail of the flames and #1 for the expression of sheer determination on the bloke carrying the barrel... Inferno-tastic!

Nice shots Alistair, really like the first one. Shame about the jacket. But that's your fault for going harcore with a wide angle :)
well it was wide angle and a barrel or a zoom lens but no barrel due to people :p

That would be brilliant thanks.
