I like #2 for the sharpness of the gull and the DoF but #1 is best themed - feet off the sand adds emphasis of the heat
 
Agree with your choice, like the focus on the gull though I'm not that keen on them :) .
Looks like Mr angry is just behind the flag carrier

Haha - Spoonbill would have been perfect and I do have shots of them. But they're not about at the moment :)

Did you crop this? Wouldn't mind seeing it a tad further back too with a bit more scenery around the subject?
