Very nice set of wildlife style captures David, particularly liking #1 & #2.

Dave the 4 frames just iillustrate how hard it can be to make a cool image in certain conditions..........IE 3 and 4 don't really work for me personally. Tis not that you haven't done the best with what you were given it's just the POV and light are so much not on your side

That said 1 is sublime mate see that ickle snip of flower top of frame going out of frame personally I'd make that go away.

Davey I'm monster nit picking here cause tis such a stonker of a frame.everything about it mate is beautiful............... subject bkg colours and even the veggies wonderful framing too Hat off !! I say this rarely bud I wish that was mine it's stunning

blue headed parrots........... the behaviour is enchanting maybe frame a tad lower??? Dave they don't seem as sharp as the Mirered parakeet.is that me buddy ?

Bless ya for sharing : every now and then someone shows me an image that makes me hungrier than I already am...................... thank you (y)

I agree the Trogon could be better - I thought that it was such a pretty bird - shame it loves the shade - I would post them.
The blue headed parrots maybe aren't quite as sharp - I think they are reasonable though. I have been experimenting with larger apertures for birds which I think better f10 - for some reason these are f8/f9. I will use aperture lock in future.
South America can have some very nice birds but they are often a lot trickier than ducks in the park

I agree with lots of what you said.
What I meant about the ducks in the park is that surprisingly a lot of birds in South American countries are in very deep shade so you have awful conditions - like these trogon which were in poor light and the angle of light was bad.
Sometimes one bird is in good light and then the next bird is in the shade (actually like these shots).
This from Colombia last year was even darker but the direction of light was good

This was handheld 1/100 which with a 150-600 mm is not easy

What a gorgeous bird!

What a gorgeous bird!
Thank you - it was worth getting up for at 3.40 am. They lek in the same place (Dona Dora in Queremal near Cali Colombia) and you can see them from 5 onwards but you need the owner to guide you. The lek is all year but the females are not most of the year.

Dave I remember that 'erm I think. long long hard day. you have shared that before haven't you?..............red cock of the rock...a special one for me.I've known of this bird since I was around 7 years old a personal special bird I'm too shattered to tell you the tale, but it's a stunning image

Ooh that's an early start! Worth it for the end result though.

I wonder if I could persuade my hubby to take a trip to South America? I couldn't make him suffer too much photography, but I'm now going to google.... plus we've both been trying to learn Spanish... another excuse.... I may be back to pick your brains.. if you'll let me :)

I have posted it before I hope I will never ever have such rubbish light ever again.

The only countries I know well are Colombia and Bolivia - Bolivia is cheaper and safer but no coast line sadly.
Also where I went in Bolivia had no attractions apart from wildlife. (Santa Cruz, Amboro, Samiapata and Chaco - I was going to go to the Amazon but my flight got cancelled and I didn't have time to go by coach).

Sadly Colombia had been getting safer since 2003 but it might start going backwards.

Yes the safety does worry me. My husband had a colleague from La Paz. Sadly we didn't keep in touch, but he thought it was funny when he was invited to the canteen for lunch - he envisaged a shoot out I think :ROFLMAO: A day trip into Tijuana is the nearest I've ever been to South America, many moons ago :)

I did google Dona Dora. I think after Christmas I will make a big effort to plan a trip. Some neighbours did a fantastic guided trip taking in a few places, so I will tap into their experience too.

Some great birds that illustrate how difficult it is to capture them in a 'perfect way', especially when you only have a limited time there! TFS

If you're from the USA Bolivia will be safer I think or similar. You have to think what you prefer for example for Jaguars, sloths, capybara etc Bolivia is a lot better than Colombia but Colombia is better than Bolivia for hummingbirds.

Thank you very much.
