Can anyone help with the best way to reduce the overall size of an image please (physical size)?
I've just tried by grabbing the corner handle and making the image smaller that way but I seem to be losing image quality/ Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

In Photoshop 2024 I'm trying to add an image to a different background and the image I'm adding is considerable larger than the background.

If you know exactly how large you want it, the (slightly) better thing to do would be to reduce the size of the original in Photoshop before copying to / inserting into the other document using Image > Image Size.

Bicubic Sharper will give you the best results for a reduction, which should be selected if you go with Automatic.

TBH I suspect it will not make a huge amount of difference, though. If you are zooming in and comparing the pixels of the reduced image with the original, it is going to contain less information. That's how it goes with raster images (ones that are based on fixed numbers of pixels).

If you must retain the detail of the original upscale the background to the size of the image you are adding. However you will end up with a larger file on disk.

Thanks for the help Rob.

Cut and past image - make sure layer with image is selected - right click on image - select "free transform" - make sure "chain link" symbol is selected (lock aspect ratio) situated between Width and Height in the top bar above the image tab - grab corner of image - when finished select tick in top bar (or "no entry to cancel) or return to finalise.

You will need to shrink the viewing size of the original until you get the corners of the pasted image in but you can do this with option/+ and option/- during the transform.
