Rhinophoridae garden 20200502.jpg

This little chap is a Rhinophorid (possible a species of Phyto) on a Daisy. The larvae of this group are parasites of Woodlice and, not surprisingly given the numbers of woodlice in the compost jeaps, are common in my garden. The family is closely related to the Calliphoridae (blue bottles, blowflies, etc) and has often been regarded as a subfamily of that family. Pretty typical of the Tachinoidea, they are very bristly and have those strong, spiky marginal bristles all over the abdomen. I don't think the flower was of any great interest to it - just something to sit on. Quite a small fly (wing length around 4-5mm) so taken at 3:1 repro ratio.
