Yes
I'm off to Silverstone tomorrow to watch my son's college Fiesta racing (MY son is part of the pit crew). Any good spots on the International circuit I may be able to get some half decent shots from (Remeber the limitations of my camera though, no DSLR with big zooms to play with). I'm limited to a 15 minute quali session in the morning and a 20 minute race in the afternoon to get track shots of the car. Plenty of Caterham races and qualifying for the rest of the day though.

This was from Bridge with only a 18-55mm kit lens, not great I know, but it gives you some idea of the distances.

Abbey as I recall you can get fairly close and its a reasonably slow corner, best bet is to turn up early and have a scout around that area.

The best place on the international circuit is Abbey, as it is one of the few places where you can shot over the fence without needing an uber long lens, being pretty much the slowest corner on the circuit helps too.

Cheers, I don't expect too many people to be there as it's not a mainstreem meeting. My first thing to do will be find my son and the team though so I know where to find them later. Any idea what the viewing area is like on the inside of the track between Bridge and Priory. Is the fence too high there?
My son's teams car is only a 1.4 Zetec Fiesta so I don't envisage speed for panning shots being too much of a problem. Just don't want any nasty fences. (Hard at Silverstone I know).

Between Bridge and Priory I think you will be high up but quite far back, I'll check to see if one of my images from the other side shows that area.

Bridge is nearest corner, priory is the left hander after. So inside would be the right hand side, hard to tell from this image as that larger fence to the very right is just leading up to the bridge crossing. I'm sure someone else remembers the circuit better than I do.

Found someone else's image that's zoomed further out, that hospitality stuff won't be there, looks like if you could get on the outside of priory it would be a good spot, but I've never been around there.

You may be able to shoot from the inside of Becketts, down towards Ireland
I've seen togs using the National club straight when the International is in use
Think it depends how the Marshals view the situation

Cheers everyone. It's been 4 years since I've been to Silverstone. I know they are unlikely to make anything more camera friendly for spectators, I was just concerned whether thay had made anything worse. That hospitallity area on the run up to priory last time I was there looked a possiblity, just wondered if anyone had actually managed anything from there. I have a small collapsable step to gain a few extra inches if necessary.

If you fancy a long walk you can get to the outside of Becketts, no fences and it's that far to walk nobody else goes there :D

Cheers can you walk both ways around the outside of the circuit, which is the easiest way to get there, round by Maggots or from th eopposite direction. I'm not afraid of a walk, at least it's flat unlike Brands Hatch.

I walked down the outside of Hangar Straight, over the bridge then back up along the inside. Take drink / food & go to the loo first as there are no facilities :D

When I got to the corner I had a quick chat with the marshals to check where I could go / stand, they even gave me tips on where the action happens :)

Or drive round!

Do you have a media pass or not?

It's worth shooting from the BRDC Grandstand going into Brooklands.

You can't really shoot from the inside of Bridge, there's a huge fence and a grassy bank. There's a stand to the outside of Bridge that you may be able to get some good shots from though.

As said the inside of Island's a good place to shoot, it's just an armco and you're quite close, but the cars are travelling pretty quickly.(I take it flat in third on my bike, so cars may be a little slower)

HTH

No media pass so "wrong" side of the fence for me.:(

You need a pretty big zoom on it at Luffields unless you're shooting through the fence in my experience.

And ok, the places I've suggested don't need media access anyway. :)

Thanks for all the suggestions. I ended up shooting from the first stand inside Copse, at Priory and Abbey. Didn't take too many at Priory though as people were sitting in their cars watching the racing and I didn't think it fair to stand in their way as they had got there before me. Unlike a bloke and his son who drove up after I picked a clear spot, they got out of the car and stood in my way of getting shots of the cars coming out from under Bridge. :(
Heres a link to some of my results anyway.
