Three weeks ago I spent a brief time in Johannesburg, South Africa. Did not have much time to do much shooting, but managed to get these. Click on the pic for bigger sizes and EXIF. Nikon D90, first two with Tamron 90mm macro, rest with Sigma 70-300APO in macro setting.

1. Huge (80mm+) Grasshopper

2. Jumping Spider in a Bottlebrush bush

3. Broad Scarlet Dragonfly.

4. Violet Dropwing Dragonfly.

5. Eyed Pansy.

6. Painted Lady.

All really good Mike. Crisp, detail and vivid (y) first and last are my faves

Violet Dropwing is my favourite out of the lot... I think it is the complete subject isolation that helps it outstrip the others, however the grasshopper is pretty good as well.

The hopper pic has a straight edged shadow which is a bit distracting placing it 2nd for me.

The butterflies are not really my thing and the odd focus in the jumping spider pic is distracting as well.

Beautiful set. All very sharp and colourful. (y)

THose South African grasshoppers are huge. They bury themselves in the soil to keep cool-if you pour water on the lawn they will come out of hiding.

Great set of bugs you found, nicely photographed too (y)
