Sons stick insect( more photos added)

I think that is a female Extatosoma tiaratum or Macleay's spectre. It is a strange species as it is can be easy or can be difficult. I used to be able to breed them without problems but now I can't.
If your son is really interested (particularly if you can get to London) this might be a good investment

They are not always that easy to photograph as some of them are so thin there is nothing to photograph. That is an easier species to photograph but I don't want to take anything away from a very good photograph.
 
BTW the nymphs of this when they hatch look like ants and if you can get them to stay still (not that easy) you should get some amazing photos.
