My lad came home from work and said I think that my wheel may be buckled
quickly adding but I don't bump up the kerbs
(Hmm admission of guilt I guess ;))

Anyhow after a quick look it was pretty obvious that the spokes were
rather loose.
Too loose in fact to tighten.

So I sent him down to Halfords (our nearest bike store) for a new wheel.
Take the old one I told him and get them to change the gear cogs over
as I have no idea how to do this (even after stripping out the spindle etc)

On no account bring the wheel back without the gear cogs being swapped over.
Well apparently the "guy" that does that is on a couple of days holiday.
And the other bright spark told my lad "Oh they just drop out"
"its an easy swap"
Well needless to say I now have two wheels, one knackered
with said gear cogs attached
and a brand new one without a hope in hell of DIYing this....

Am I missing something or does it need pressing out?
Help would be appreciated
Thanks (y)

If its a cassette type you will need the remover tool and a chain whip to hold it still, also beware it goes with a crack when you undo it

One other thing to watch when replacing it is the freehub body has splines and has to be located correctly, more than likely the gears and brakes will need some small adjustments with the new wheel

If you are anywhere near Cambridge, bring it round and I'll change it over

Thanks Simon thats a start (y)
It get the cogs off but the bearing remains.
The new wheel has a thread on (what should be) the hub so I guess that it must unscrew somehow.

Thanks Rich (y) and I appreciate the offer but sadly I'm about 50 miles away.

Is there any other local cycle shops who might be able to help you out?

Thanks Ian Thats what I suspected.
I think I'll wait till the guy is back off holiday
He bought the bike and the wheel from halfords so I guess Its down to them

Have a look at this photo from Sheldon Brown's website
freewheel-vs-k7.jpg

Do both of your wheels look like one of those or do you have one of each?

Oh Bugger! two types of wheels?
The new one looks like the one on the left and as the old one was taken down as
a comparison I hope the old one does too, but cant see enough of it to be sure

A "freehub" uses the outer sprocket to secure the cassette of sprockets.

A conventional hub has a threaded boss, to which the freewheel body screws. Remove the outer sprocket(s) with chainwhips and tiny ball bearings spill everywhere! The freewheel is removed with a special pronged tool (specific to the manufacturer) and bloomin' big spanner.

Thanks for that (y)

That should throw some light on the removal and replacement of the freehub assy.

:)

Thanks DF but actually it now looks as though its the other "type"

It sounds like you've got the wrong replacement wheel.

Another couple of very detailed images from Sheldon Brown which should tell you for definite.

Old type - your replacement wheel?

Its beginning to look like I may well have a miss matched
replacement :(

Thanks for all your help guys, much appreciated (y)
I'll leave it there and go yell loudly in the managers ear tomorrow,
and they can sort it on both counts!

Just in case anyone is remotely interested,
This is all sorted :)
I had a word with organ grinder rather than the monkey,
at Halfords yesterday.
2 minutes and a deep socket (special tool as he put it) later
job done.
The whole thing just unscrewed, and screwed back on again.

Thanks once again for all the help earlier (y)
