Hi looking advice on a suitable lens for shooting airshows etc.

Looking to upgrade to a D7000 with a 18-105 VR incl.

Had considered 70-300 VR but unsure if this would be sufficient.
Not a lot of budget but somewhere round £500 or I might consider hiring a lens this year and purchasing next year.
Any advice opinions welcome.

£500 ain't a great deal of money for a long'ish zoom. The only one of merit in that ball park is the sigma 120-400mm f4.5-5.6 OS You'll need at least a 400mm lens just because of the display lines distance from the crowds. As you say, the other option is just hire a lens for this season and increase the lens budget. The Nikon 300mm f4 another good option, with / without TC but thats a step up again. Then you have the sigma 150-500mm f4.5-6.3 OS for less than £700 and 50-500mm f4.5-6.3 OS lenses around the £1100 mark, but you can now guess what sort of budget you'll need

a long one with glass at both ends

Thanks for that long and helpful post. If my questions bother you you dont have to post. But I am sure you feel better for posting. Well done and have a nice day.(y)

The longest lens that you can find for that money. Be it secondhand or new. Whatever the best deal you can get. You will never have enough reach I'm afraid.
It becomes an obsession. Trust me.;)
I would think that at this stage the Sigma range would be good. 150-500mm, 120-400mm or maybe even the 50-500mm if you get good light.

Kev.
