Hey, I looking for places in stoke that have a "sense of place" so somewhere that has an interesting story behind it. It's as part of a University project, I was thinking about going into the old derelict potteries and taking images in there but think most of them are quite hard to get into. So i was wondering if you guys could help me out please.

It can be anything (e.g. open spaces, bus stations...) anywhere that you think may be particularly interesting.

Any help will be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance, Matt.

stay away from the Potteries Shopping Centre is my advice, I was asked to leave by security for being a security risk, although they couldnt explain to me WHY!!!!! Removed whilst photographing the stairway - not a nice place for toggers

Nice old bulidings around Stone though

Stoke is pretty rough and rundown in lots of places. If you want good stuff to photograph then there's the Gladstone Pottery Museum and the Etruria Industrial Museum. Stay out of Hanley. It's a dump. In fact most of Stoke is a dump. I live there so I'm allowed to be rude about it!

There are also quite a few parks that you can visit so it isn't all grim. And somewhere around Talke there is a place called Parrot's drumble that is some ancient woodland thing. There's also Westport Lake which is full of wildlife.

Nothing like a Stokie giving Stoke a good reputation (y) There is pretty much everything in stoke except mountains (peak district is close) and the sea.

There is lots of old industrial places same as most northern cities. If you want picturesque go out of the centre for 20-25 minutes in any direction and you have lots of beautiful countryside, villages etc. The roaches are good for landscapes they are the otherside of Leek (which is a very odd place :wacky: ) What are you looking for exactly?

A few quieter spots for nice shots:

Knypersly Reservoir
Hanchurch Woods/Beech Caves

haha stokes not too bad  I'm at Stoke university, and live near Hanley park, and its errrmmm...lovely?

thanks for all the suggestions guys, iv looked into them and I think I'm going to go to Mow Cop as it seems to have the most history. As the location needs to tell a story I think it will be quite an interesting location. I'll post the pictures up once iv been and see what you think of them.

thanks again, Matt.

Mow cop is nice. There's also Chatterly Whitfield for the old colliery and also the Apedale park and mining doodad near Chesterton.

Renew north staffs have ruined lots of areas that used to be quite ok.

I'm glad you said that because i worked in stoke for 2 years and it is an absoloute dump. But i can say hand on heart that it's got the friendliest people there outside of yorkshire.

Anyway, how about Trentham gardens/estate. Lot's of history and very scenic.

I've just moved back to Stoke myself. Quite a transition considering I lived in front of the sea for lived by the sea for three years at uni. Over here the closest ocean view is...blackpool.

It's different. It's definitely different. Stoke is a bit ugly, it has to be said, but that's where it gets most of its dramatic charm. It has a very metallic personality to it which I love. I'm tempted to go explore all the industrial estates. Get some cold, hard, ugly, brutal, metal shots of machine and concrete. :p

Which brings me to my question: is there any "pretty" derelict zones worth checking out? :)

There are so many pretty old derelict building by the canal in middleport. I'm not sure what the access is like though (y)

Trentham Gardens as already said.
Monkey Forest

Also, have a look into the brick industry if you want something with a bit of a story behind it... there's loads of brickworks around Stoke, either in operation or disused now. Chesterton, Parkhouse, Silverdale, Brownhills spring to mind. You could combine that with coal mining again at Silverdale.

For pretty industrial wastelands there is Blue Planet. The sustainable office building that has been empty since it was built 3 years ago. Dipsticks put it in the middle of bleeding nowhere and wonder why it is empty... it's just off Peacock Hay Road off the A34/A500 roundabout. One end of Harecastle Tunnel is also very near there. There's another empty office building just round the corner from it too.

There is a train track right behind it. There's also part of Bathpool park off that same road that is a mixture of woodland, lake thing and has a rail track running through it. It has also been partly ruined by a local farmer chopping down loads of trees and fencing part of it in as it was discovered the council didn't actually own the land... might make for some interesting news pictures as there is a meeting about it tomorrow night and the police said they were going to keep the peace!!
