Studio setup for photographing clothes

I've been put in charge of building a permanent photography setup for photographing items for an on line store. The shots need to be very high quality as the items being sold are designer clothes.

I'm planning on using a couple of 500 watt halogen floodlights. My questions is this: Is it worth building a soft light panel (http://www.diyphotography.net/homestudio/blz/soft-light-panel-frame) or will a few umbrellas do? Space is not a huge issue but the quality of the shots is.

Also would a white background or a green screen be better? All photos will have to be cropped and processed for the site anyway and i was wondering if a green screen would make that easier.

Thanks for any advice

Hi Ript,

The halogens and the green screen are both going to be really unhelpful to you. The halogens will change colour as they get warmer meaning that each shot will need it's own colour balance if you're going to represent the product truthfully. The green would also cause you colour issues as the light from the lamps (whatever you use) will be one colour and the reflected light another.... green. :D

White for you're background will be far more preferable and a good set of studio lights with brolleys, barn doors sofboxes and some reflectors is really what you need.

Plus someone who knows what to do with it all of course. :)

Thanks for the info about the lights. What would you recommend as a good alternative to the halogens?
