I freely admit i have terrible trouble with shooting black birds (and black dogs)!!, so quite happy to be shot down:D

You've caught them well - but I can't help but notice a slight halo around the blackbird....

Always find getting the detail out of black-birds hard - what settings did you use? :)

I'm having similar issues shooting black squirrels against bright grass so pinging this thread for hints from you experts. Thanks. I've been finding that using the tone curve sliders in LR3 gives better range of blacks than hitting the fill light (makes the blacks look washed out some). Gives a better balanced image as a whole than painting in dark areas with higher brightness / exposure.
